First Post, so apologies in advance.
I have the opportunity to move from USA to Ecuador very soon. (UK Citizen)
Costs of vehicles in Ecuador look to be expensive.
What's the rules on car importation & rough costs all in.
I also have a 1974 Vespa 150 Super I'd like to bring.
Any ideas on company's who could get them through the paperwork mire, with an estimated cost to compare to buying locally.
Is there a lease option typically for vehicles available.
Houston to Quito would be route.
probably only intend to stay 2 or 3 years.

cheers for any advice

Its usually better to sell where you are and buy something in Ecuador. Especially if you want a 150cc scooter, they are plentiful here and not expensive. The problems associated with bringing in a car and maintaining it in Ecuador are much greater.

Start out here with a locally purchased 250cc or smaller moto and then re-evaluate the situation. You might decide you don't need/want to risk all in traffic.

I should say....."especially in Quito"

Only returning Ecuadorians can bring a motor vehicle with their personal effects when moving back to Ecuador. There are rules for them on engine size, age, purchase price, etc.
The basic answer for a non Ecuadorian is no on both counts no matter what year the vehicle is.

@ Sin - good to see you weighing in with your extant knowledge again:) RU back in Vilca and/or doing the teeth thing in Cuenca?? And what about *your* Moto-plans? Brought the engine for your (non-electrical) dream-machine???

I might just buy a quad cycle. They have the status of motorcycles here in spite of the four wheels. I have located one for $2K. Its a little used 250cc "moto one" more stable than two wheels and just the thing for buzzing around the area.

But....I need a helmet. Anybody know of a store in Cuenca or Loja (or anywhere else in Ecuador) with the larger sizes? I don't think my head is extra large, hat size 7-1/4"

A Vespa would last about a day in Ecuador. Would be stolen or run over within a block.

I did find a helmet in Loja today. At the Honda store on Universitaria. Brand is GR1. Has the DOT sticker. An XXL which seems to fit great. $90 and the only XXL they had.

Now to look for the best deal and finally decide on a Quadron or a two or three wheeler.

Lots of options, new and used, all the way up to $3K. That's my personal limit. It would be great to get a nice used motorcycle in the states and ship it down. $3K here gets a decent 250cc Chinese something. It might break but there are lots of mechanics in Ecuador and those parts are available. We shall see.,

Obviously it would have been nicer to bring a 650 from the states but I haven't seen many people do it without major bucks. But where's the challenge when you have major bux?
