Post anything you want on here so that no one feels the thread they were the original poster of has gone off topic.. ( like every thread has done and will do ) .

That was just a preamble. We are one day away from DJT being sworn into office. The Senate confirmation hearings - they've been like pulling teeth and to watch. I seldom cringe, but most of these appointees are possibly the most insane choices for the offices they are poised to fill.
...and vetted? No.. it would seem the transition team just skipped that part and figured the chips could fall where they may.

The appointee for the EPA? Oklahoma's Atty General.. really? He shut down OK's state version of the EPA.. and he has sued the US EPA 19 times (8 of them still are pending)
...so, what? He is going to head a dept he is currently suing? He'll be plaintiff, defendant, judge and jury... should he be confirmed.

...sued the EPA over regulations concerning clean water.. air purity.. soot..

Mercury levels? ...yeah that too. The list goes on.

But hell, that's only the tip of the iceberg. There will be 6 or more vacant seats for directors in the NSA.. from the director of African affairs, to Europe to Israel and the Levant and on.

And these seats don't even need confirmation.. just need to simply appoint SOME one ...but they'll be empty after tomorrow.

The pick for Heath and Human Services is a mess... He has traded individual securities while working and voting on bills that directly affected the stock prices, has bought on tips and ....really.

Did they vet any of them even a little first? Damn..

Rick Perry was offered the job of heading the energy dept.. and thinking that this meant having control over international oil and gas issues, he quickly accepted.

...but that's not the job.
but being over our nuclear arsenal is. ...really? Rick Perry is going to be in charge of the Earth's largest cache of thermonuclear weapons?

I have never experienced actual angst as a new POTUS took office. This time though... angst is a pretty big understatement. And hell... I'm not even the paranoid type. But I am watching this mess play out and noticing my mouth is hanging open half the time in disbelief.

So please - steal this thread. Throw some mud.. "banter" or make jokes all you wish. I need the distraction.
Of course, I'm serious about the content, and these things are barely 5? of what is really baking my noodle.

....really?

Its a shame that tomorrow DT will announce the merger of the USA with the Russian Federation and issue common stock in the new enterprise.

Vlad and Don will be joint CEOs and Medvedev the doorman at Trump Towers

A shame because we will miss all the cool NATO reporting names for Warsaw Pact assets.

"Hobgoblin" was one of my favorites, listening on HF as I did. An OTH radar that chirped thru the short waves.

I like science fiction so I shouldn't be so upset by this latest development. A cat among the pigeons is bound to be interesting. Its just that old folks like stability. Markets like it too. And peace also likes stability....

Bye bye stability

Almost never get involved -- but a daily "lurker". Frequently appalled by the rudeness of some "contributors". Be that as it may, my mantra with this "worldly" election is, I've lived thru Cuban Missile Crisis as a 15 yr old within blast range of nearest airbase to Cuba (McDill AFB), Reagan, & 2 Bushes. This next four years has pushed my final "surrender" to The Highest (& only) Power of my life! You never know, this might be the push that I need to finally get to Ecuador! Hopper,
Enough of this useless banter. Just remember that a few more states passed the laws decriminalizing the big "M." Of course one thing they failed to do was pardon those rotting away in prisons around the country that "smoked them if they had them!" Some a little more involved but none the less, can you imagine being incarcerated, having a record, or not being a full fledged American because of something you once did that is now completely legal? So, my prayers go out to those that are residing in the various "greybar hotels" around the world in f'd-up legal systems or to those that will always carry the "scarlet letter" in their records for something that is now deemed and approved to be legal!
Ok, Now my question. Did I highjack your thread? lol

windshadow,
Well put.
On his last full day in office, President Obama announced 330 more commutations, bringing his total number of clemencies to 1,715. He has granted commutations to more people than the last 12 presidents combined.
You've got to give kudos to Obama - although it's too little, too late - for the Presidential pardons and clemencies he just granted, goin' out the door. Many granted to people serving ridiculously draconian sentences for insignificant, non-violent crimes.
I doubt, in my lifetime, that there will ever be another President to commute as many sentences or pardon as many people.
I doubt we'll see any compassion shown by the incoming Emperor.

While I do believe that Mr. Obama will deservedly be judged very kindly by history (for NOT Presiding over a global economic collapse), preserving the Status Quo was not without its costs. "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And Good Riddance...)" @ "Chip" - the whole charade of governance (even in our supposed democracy) is so rotten to the core, it's pointless to sweat over Dick Perry and Co. managing to make things worse. (I'll bet you can't name 10 people who have served - in which posts? - in Obama's Cabinets over the past 8 years.) So what makes you think Trump's Appointees will make much difference? (If Jesus Christ was named the Director of Health and Human Services, what difference do you think he could make prior to being tarred, feathered and run out of DC???) I take no sides at this point (I distrust both Coke and Pepsi equally;), but it bears repeating that for the first time in all of human history a single individual will LITERALLY have at his fingertips the power to DIRECTLY access and influence the hearts and minds of our entire planet WITHOUT the constraining mechanisms of his Advisors, the Legislature, his Keepers in the "Intelligence" Community, and the Mainstream-ing Global Media. Given Trump's tutelage, (by the likes of Roy Cohn and John Gotti), maniacal Ego and "Volatile" temperment, it promises to be an unprecedented battle between DT and the awesome forces assembling against him. "Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours to see..." @ Sin - "Stability is just another word for nothing left to lose..." And while instability may roil the markets in general, it *always* proves enormously profitable for those who Broker it, ne est ce pas???

A couple of trolls, who frequently post on this forum, are fond of using the term " libertard " as a derogative when describing progressives or liberals ( or anyone who disagrees with them, politically. )
Since we live in a Spanish speaking country, I thought I might point out the "libertad" in Spanish translates as "liberty" and "libertard" translates as "libertarian" !
I'll accept being called a libertarian ( with a small L ) just as I consider myself a catholic ( with a small c )

You ain't right in the head Sin.. but... you're not wrong either..lol

Early 80s.. first Med cruise.. a lowly petty officer 3rd class and I'd heard all the old salt's tales of girls here and there.. (believed about 1/4 of them)

I was in Palma de Mallorca, Spain walking though "Blood Alley" or "The Gut" ...the one area we were told before reaching port that we couldn't go.

They were kind enough to hand out maps showing were we couldn't go, and gave us those nicknames so we couldn't tell the cab drivers where it was we were not going... (I have yet to figure out the ship's logic for that one)

Long story short - a short chick steps out of the shadows and says, "f*ky-s*ky 5 bucks Joe?"

....in a British accent.

I just stopped and turned and looked at her like she was nuts (probably was).
I said, "girl, where in the HELL are you from??". ...She says, "Liverpool England".
And I said, "sooo.. now you're on an island in the Mediterranean, popping out of alleys saying 'f*ky s*ky? ...maybe you should go home?"

It was as sad as it was bizarre. But I realized that a lot more of those sea stories I had heard were probably true.. over the next several years, I found out they were.

The ship also told us before hand that hash was legal there - just not for us.

The ship smelled funky all the way down the Suez canal, through the Red Sea and into the South Indian Ocean...

Then I think everyone sort of ran out..

.....good times

Our new President signed an executive order banning refugees from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. He signed it on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), a day when we particularly remember how European Jews were refused entry to the US (& other countries), and sent back to Germany to be slaughtered.

His Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day statement made no mention of Jews.

Some have called this "tone deaf".

I don't think it's tone deaf at all. Tone deaf implies an unintentionally negative message. I think it's pointedly and intentionally crafted with a specific xenophobic & antisemetic message for his supporters.

When we say Never Again... we mean Everyone..

"Protesters cheer as judge issues ruling freeing Muslims detained in airports by Donald Trump...

Numerous individuals had been detained in airports in the United States as a result of Trump’s order, prompting thousands of protesters to rally in support of them at airports including JFK in New York and Dulles in Washington DC. Even as Americans took over entire terminals and airport parking garages due to their sheer number, attorneys and civil rights organizations descended on the scene — and the ACLU sued. That led to a 7pm hearing at a federal courthouse in Brooklyn, which also drew thousands of protesters outside its front steps.

Judge Ann M. Donnelly granted an immediate stay against Trump’s order around 8:45pm, which was immediately announced on social media by those who were in the room. Jackie Vimo of the National Immigration Law Center tweeted the following: “The stay is granted! 4 factors have been met: Irreparable harm established, likelihood of success on merits, no harm to govt. Likelihood of class cert.” The judge then demanded that the government provide a list of who’s being detained, and it responded by claiming it didn’t know precisely who was being detained. The judge’s reply: “Work it out.”

.... And that boys is why we study the Holocaust, and why Trumps distorted message was beyond cruel or hurtful, it was evil.

Expatsooner
  1/29/2017 04:31 EST

Leaving Trump behind for a moment - and in the interests of "stealing the thread" - I wanted to talk about the other "big issue" of the day...

...That is, the inability of most people to use the words "lose" and "loose" in the correct context.

For the slow ones, let me explain it:

My pants are falling off me. They could be considered "loose".

On the other hand...

I need to "lose" some weight, so my pants will be "loose", (and thus fall off me).

With me so far? Good.

You aren't "loosing" something, unless you're letting it loose (or, indeed, "loosening" it, as in a knot). You don't "loose" weight; you "lose" it. (Or, if you're like me, you gain it, but that's a different story).

For those who would say "But I stand to loose everything!" Would you also say "I need to losen my grip on ? No.

It seems "loose" as a generic catch-all word meaning either something is "loose" or something is being "lost" is entering the general lexicon. I wouldn't mention it, except that this thread seemed to be the right place for it.

I'll go back to quietly "losing" my religion now...

/end thread with loose OT association.

windshadow
  1/29/2017 08:28 EST

Expatsooner,
In regard to your use of loose:
The reason you pants are loose is because you are loose and don't want to lose a chance at getting a little loose with your not so loose parts. Lose the inhibition and loose things might come your way. Getting your loose pants to stay on might be a losing game but then again it could all be in the definition of losing. (:

@ OH - it is worth pointing out that Israel would do well to show even a glimmer of respect for Islam, and lighten up on their destruction/ elimination/ genocide of Palestinians... Trump's *perhaps* short-sighted Proclamations pale in comparison to *that* lengthy, momentous and escalating carnage:(

And then there is the ess. S added to denote more than one. 's to denote he is, she is. And s' to denote possession. I wish they taught punctuation in school. Drives me crazy.

RoyalPayne,
Bag it jackwad! No one that I know of has elected you their educator, their "PC" police, or wants to hear your crap. Communications is more important than someone that thinks they know it all. Piss-off!
LOL, did you get my message? No malice 'just sayin,' Beeotch!
As for driving you crazy, short trip no doubt! Suggest you join the world of "things that matter!"
I wrote this because your message is full of punctuation errors as you chastise others. I heard someone once say, "hey M****F****, don't call me M****F***!" Seems to apply here.

This is by far the worst and most pervasive error - even in films, media and literature,,,,,,,,,,"me" versus "I," confusing subject with object. Example: "Me and Pam are going to the store." Would you say "Me is going to the store?" It should be "I am going to the store," and "Pam and I are going to the store."
Or: "He went to the store with Pam and I," Would you say, "He went to the store with I"? To me the error has always seemed glaring, but it is so common as to almost be the new grammatical norm. Sad.

Buddaland,
I didn't go anywhere with Pam, can't stand the Beotch.

Yeah, hell I live around so many beloved rednecks here, man... if I allowed grammer to actually bother me - ..well, I suppose I would stay bothered - 'cause it sho ain't gonna get no more literate around here..lol

But yes, the use of I and me is simple enough, (it would seem)..

The biggest mistake I hear would most likely be "you and I " vs "you and me".. (the second being correct).. but the first sounds right to my ears.. but it ain't.

We actually sit around and take note of the crazy "words" used around here on a frighteningly regular basis.

For instance. - "thang'll"
...that is a contraction of the words "thing" and ""will" ...with the word, thing, being phonetically altered to reflect the way one would hear it.. IE "thang".

Now... "thang'll" is nothing
My favorite would have to be..

"Retched upinunder"

No, you see.. if you dog has rolled it's ball under your couch, and you have retrieved this wayward ball (because it rolled between your feet and was beneath the couch)

...you would have "retched upinunder" the couch to get the ball. see?

Just as the laws Newtonian physics fall apart at the subatomic level, and the laws of quantum mechanics and uncertainty principles come into play... so it is (grammatically) here in North "By God" Belmont..

...seriously, it boggles one's boggle.
(and i used an apostrophe to indicate possession)

Hey windshadow:

"Communications is more important than someone that thinks they know it all."

You do mean "communications are" right?

Naw...

But you are so easily messed with...

Couldn´t resist when you left yourself so open to that.

Are you in time out with your wife again, because you seem to be a bad mood all the time., Sounds like frustration...but that´s a personal problem.

BTW... what´s the group think about the attack on Yemen that went south...and the faked claim that Iran attacked one of our ships?

RoyalPayne,
I was just playing with you! I actually agree with everything you are saying. You will find that true about us Leo type personalities.
Have you ever noticed how documentarians like to hire people with British accents as their speakers? Give the documentary more "credibility" rather than listening to some hillbilly from WV or NC. :)

windshadow
  2/5/2017 19:21 EST

OH,
You asked some great questions. The answers are, not in any particular order:
Sort of,
yes,
yes,
no,
I don't know but ask me later,
Now, about the bullstuff that brings us to bomb, kill, and destroy, it doesn't seem to be party affiliated. I was one of the people that believed BO would really put a stop to that war craziness. He even was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! I was disappointed, surprised, not really, that is what all politicians are about. They lie like dogs to get to the top and then do whatever makes them rich. I liked BO's swagger but other than that he can go away and I won't be sad.
As for Trump, We could be in trouble but then again we might have a winner. He is doing the same as all the rest, even his presidential orders sound exactly like the previous presidential orders. You can download them and read them. Almost exactly the same.
So, where does this bring us today? I worry for my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. No matter which one of the evil bastards had won we were Fcuekd!

Hey Windy,

lol.. don't think I didn't catch that NC hillbilly poke. You're right though about sounding credible. It is hard for me to hear some of what is said and not laugh out loud (to use a much over used phrase).. which can be awkward if the speaker is saying something serious..

,,if barely discernible..

I am a transplant - born and raised in the Seattle area. I didn't used to have an accent, but not long ago I "heard" myself. It was weird as hell too.. I met Susan for the first time back in Sept. We were having a frozen drink at the beachfront bar at the hotel I was staying at in Montanita.

We started to talk, and (now, this was the first english conversation I had had with anyone from the US in over 2 months)
...oh man! I could hear it on my voice, this southern accent, and it was freaky..

@Sue
yeah, thanks for that.. making me feel like I just walked off a Dukes of Hazzard shoot.. ..yeah. nice

lol

@Sue

The attack that went bad in Yemen, man - I would really like to know what all really happened there..

I mean, I know the released story so far. It is one of those things that we can't remotely know if what we're hearing is "nearly" complete, or just "barely" so.

But as to that supposed attack on a US Naval vessel.. damn, Spicer will seriously say anything.

There was a Saudi frigate attacked, but that was by Houthi in Yemen.. not Iran.

but, even though that was BS, I know those waters very very well, and to be honest, Iran has always been a real pain in the ass for us in the gulf. At the entrance of the Persian Gulf on the North side of the Arabian Peninsula, is The Straits of Hormuz and it is always a hot bed. We anchor at a place called Whiskey Anchorage off the coast of Oman... But Yemen it just around the corner to the right.. and Iran id just across the water to the left..

Damn I wanted to tell a story about us (US) and Iran there in the straits but I better not.

Oh! I can tell you this though!
Iran scattered mines (magnetic sea mines) all throughout the Persian Gulf back in the early 80s ..84 actually. Their reason was to disrupt oil tankers traveling from Kuwait (which is as far back in the gulf as you can get) that were shipping oil through the Gulf and to the West.. largely to us.

So, we didn't have enough mine sweepers ( they have wooden hulls - non magnetic) to escort all of these tankers out.. so there were metal hulled frigates like mine who had to go all the way in to Kuwait, hook up with a tanker, who would very slowly follow us out.

and it isn't like you have some "mine detection gadget" either.. nah.
you have 20 sailors crammed onto the bow of the ship.. 10 on port, 10 on starboard, and literally visually looking at the water, spotting these big ass, very explosive, mines that float just barely beneath the surface (hard to see)
so, actually having to zig zag through that mess with an enormous floating oil can right behind us.

Iran did/does a lot more than that too. But if anything happens at sea, if nobody saw it, and no one can tell about it? oh, it didn't happen

The straits on the other (southern) side of the peninsula is called the Straits of Bab - el Mandeb. This cozy little spot is off the Yemen coast as you leave the Red Sea. ...now, THAT is one messed up place. It makes the Gulf and Iran seem like a Wet and Wild water - park

blahblahblah.. I know..lol
