I am leaving the forum, and I wanted to let those here that have helped me and answered my questions know that I appreciated their help and advice.
However, I have posted 3 questions here and by the third question I was attacked. My third question was simply wanting to know how the postal system works in Ecuador and if I should take any steps to ensure I get mail to avoid potential disruptions to my SS payments.
Apparently I insulted or offended some by pointing out that I was concerned about losing my SS and was told at least indirectly that they did not appreciate the implications of my questions and how it related to how they were dealing with the situation.
Others attacked me for apparently using a word incorrectly in explaining why the SS would ever stop making my payments. Even implying I was making it up, having "never heard of such a thing".
The reason I am leaving the US is that I no longer enjoy living there and the reason is exactly because of this type of behavior. The US is not going to be great again anytime soon, and I think it is exactly because of this - Americans can't even carry on a simple civil conversation with strangers without resorting to insults and attacks or taking offense where none was intended.
I don't know any of you and have no reason to attack you or offend you or accuse you of anything. My question was simply made in seeking help to understand how others are dealing with a real life issues in moving to and retiring in Ecuador, My question did not mention what anyone else was doing, or make any political statement - it was simply one stranger asking other strangers for help. The question was posted in the welcome forum, precisely because I read on this site that there had been issues with heated discussions in the other forum, and the moderators wanted to keep the Welcome forum free of that so new comers would feel welcome and safe posting. Well, it didn't work.
So, to those that have provided me so much help in such a little amount of time, I say thank you, to the others, I say, good luck and good fortune I hold no ill feelings towards anyone here, but I have no desire to use a forum where I have to choose my words carefully to avoid confrontations.
To everyone here I say good bye.

Dear Frank,
I share your sentiments but am not so easily offended or quick to realize that too many of these folks do NOT have good intentions. I was willing to take the good with the bad for sips of sometimes solid info mixed in with mounds of dubious facts, until I realized that the mean-spiritedness of the regular participants effectively poisons the well:((( Bien Viaje! Does this mean you're finally going away Cristos. Please oh please stay, your words of wisdom have so enlightened so many of us. Your vast knowledge of everything Ecuador has definitely made living here so much more interesting And your being an anal individual who is afraid of his own shadow has shown most of us why it's good not to be you, worried about everything Please don't leave, who will worry about Dumluck

I agree witch you. I almost quit the forum several times but then I discovered - "SkinThickener" . Its OTC in many areas and not expensive.
With "SkinThickner" all the rants, the tirades, bombasts, harangues, the inuendos and rhetoric, the bile and backstabbing belittlement, muck raking and mud-slinging - just bounce off my armored epidermis.
The Lunatic clown in chief is setting a really high bar for rhetoric so it is incumbent on all of us to not rise to bait hung so low.
a useful rejoinder when someone verbally hurts your feelings is -
"Oh Ya?, so's yer brodah!
anyway - none of this is real. Software algorithms and random name generators are the "people" you are unhappy with. "Sneego" is just some simple code written in JAVA, only taking up 20K or so. Simple caca, not a real person, smoke and mirrors.
Join me in a petition asking Betsy to start a Mars Forum. We'll begin populating it early - by 20 or 30 years maybe. We'll handle questions like, "my dog muffy likes bacon and caviar dip, will it be available on Mars" or "Where are the high crime areas of Mars? Do the Martians like gringos?"
We early Mars expats would share our experience and encouragement with the new folks. If we create a warm and kind environment from the start I think people will flock to the Mars Forum.
On behalf of all the avatars posing as human, I am sorry you have been injured. But, you may find real humans are even worse than us!!

With regard to the Social Security thread that seems to be a major cause of Frank’s departure...
I just re-read all the non-Frank posts on that thread .. and I don’t see anything objectionable.
I see many posts in which folks attempted to give Frank useful advice.
Perhaps somebody else can see what I can’t.
Two posters said they haven’t seen anything like what Frank described .. and Frank considered that some type of putdown.
That’s no putdown. That’s an honest opinion that the situation is unfamiliar to two responding posters.
Expats who misconstrue such mild comments need to think long and hard as to whether they are up to moving to a foreign country where things are unlikely to go smoothly every day.

CCCMedia, Maybe we weren't PC enough. Maybe some people live with their panties in a wad. Maybe we don't GAS, (care) enough. Maybe some are beyond help because they are looking for a fight and can't relax and through the ball back and forth. Maybe some just like to try and control others rather than listening to what is being said. Trolls stand on both sides of the bridge, some are obvious and some not.

Sinego, Give my leftover caviar to Muffy! It was nice seeing you and all your Mars bound friends in Foilville. LOL By-the-way, and I spell it out instead of using BTW that can be mistranslated as Bitetheweenie to us older dustbags, dirtbags, and for my friend Remoore (Windhags, Windbag, lol) etc., my friend look healthy, happy, and in great spirits. Whatever you are eating, smoking, drinking, keep it up. It is serving you well. Again, it was great seeing you. Stop by when you return to Cuenca. I am planning a trip to Catamayo soon so maybe you will have a reason for a trip to take the back road.

C7 will never move here, it is lucky to make it to the bathroom in time, then again, sooner or later all of us may have that luck. lol Come on Christos7, you can do it. Buy a ticket and come on down. MaskedMurder! Bwwaaaaaa! Now that is funny! You got a belly laugh out of me on that one.
Frank, maybe it might be what the doctor ordered. Come down here, start running your mouth and you never know what might happen. Now, on the serious side Frank, let's be frank. Frankly speaking, of course we don't hate you but after reading your post we just don't like the things you said. All these people posting on here are good folks, we have fun, we try to help, we call a spade a spade, and when we are out of line we admit it, ok you got me on that one but it might have happened once, however, she died two months ago. When you are out of line we call it! You are not anything "special" even though you think you are. None of us are. We are just like you, just like rabbits, we bump our butts on the ground every step we take. Get over yourself and you might learn basic human skills you should have learned in preschool, or are you to old or senile to remember that time of your life?

Yo Reem Job - while you are beyond enlightenment, you and WS are the principal reasons why a lot of people don't post on this forum, or visit a few times then fare-thee-well. While I have thanked and supported the Moderator for several months, and tolerated your boorishness, this forum is out of control with vicious fools like you who seem determined to poison every discussion you troll. Attacks upon people's religion & health in particular should be grounds for denying them the priviledge of Expat-Exchange Membership, and I have castigated DL on more than one occassion for doing so. And speaking of DL, your implied threat of violence should also be grounds for having your priviledges revoked. If Susan is all good with this Forum becoming an arena for Blood Sport, as opposed to simply "contentious", then someone else should undertake to actually Moderate who is allowed to "contribute". While I pity you, a house-cleaning is in order, and soon enough you will have to find somewhere else to purge your bile.

I have to say OP has a good sense of humor. There is really no need to announce that you are living. Just do not visit the site if you have no additional needs. OP's post only intent was to stir some rantings.
This type of forum is not being used properly. It is supposed to be a place where people interested in living abroad come to look for information, a place where people already living abroad come to volunteer their experience. It is supposed to operate like a revolving door, the people who got help from the site, become the new volunteer experts, and the old volunteers fade away...
Why should you stress over somebody's comment? Most people here are anonymous users.
Feel free to visit the site from time to time, and contribute if you have the answer to a question.
As the French would say,
Adieu!!

Hello Frank, and others. After reading these comments, and on many other posts, I must agree with you. Most new posts starts out with a positive question, no matter how idiotic or 'stupid' some may think, then it spirals into negativity and hateful comments. Windshadow should be banned from this forum.
The administrator, Susan I believe, needs to really think about what kind of forum she wants. Right now, this forum offers little advice (usually at the beginning of each post), and a lot of abuse, negativity and hate.
Adiós también.

Some of you folks like to tell us how bad this forum is. And yet, here you are. You take the time to read it and to post also. If you go to any other expat exchange forum for any other country you will find less than 50% of the traffic Ecuadors forum has. And don't even try to tell me it's because there are more expats in Ecuador, there isn't. So somehow this being such a terrible place folks keep signing on. Just my observation

I have to reply in defense of our moderators. I found so much information about moving to Cuenca on this forum that I have yet to be surprised by the situation actually living here. Many people that wind up moving back to "the continent" do so because they feel that the information given to them was "sugar coated." Some people do like to joke around but no one has ever said anything here that made me feel attacked. And some of the questions posted could be answered by a few minutes searching on google. If you can't laugh at yourself or handle strangers treating you without kid gloves, I would be surprised if you could handle a move to a continent with a whole new culture and language. So many of us are just grateful at how open the expats on this forum are about very personal matters. Thank you again to everyone on here, especially kmoriarty, windshadow, sinego, ocean hideaway, cccmedia. You guys have helped and made us laugh!

We shouldn't be having these discussions and probably wouldn't be if the people in the USA got "bitch slapped" for being stupid instead of being coddled like some Ne'er-do-well that thinks they deserve something special out of life. Hut, I tell yu whut, it ain't a gonna happen here girls! All we ask is that you stop and listen to yourselves for a moment. Izz bean known da bite back! So give this ol boy an inch and I'll try to send you some good info, and, I will tell you I don't know when I don't. Ever notice we pass people back and forth to get them help? How many times has our own moderator, Susan, gone and done a butt-load of research for some jackwad only to be disparaged by them later because it wasn't what they wanted to hear? They are trolls, nothing more. They don't know how to play, they just run off to mommy and boooohoooo. Makes me want to vomit! Hear me Christos7? I am tired of trying to encourage you! This is the first commentary I have made on this board, but it was really meant just to tell him to let all the extra stuff roll off his back and ignore, But it is correct that if you read many of the posts, it is great info and then some snarky unnecessary remarks. I was just trying to let the guy know that you just blow past them and look for the nuggets of good information, which many spend alot of time and effort to help with.

Don't let one person bother you. I subscribe to more than one site looking at Latin American countries to move to. The one on Mexico gets down right nasty fighting over politics. I think your question is a good one. I also wonder how the postal service works in Ecuador. I know nothing about it.

giershift43, Postal Service is kind of a hit or miss thing. The last three items I received were over 1 month getting here. Simple letters from SSI and from Bank in USA.
I must say though, when I had a PO Box in Cuenca it seemed the mail was faster. Then again that was almost six years.ago. When a letter arrives in Cuenca for you it is delivered to your home. In my case they just throw it under the door, which is under the car... It works but not very well. That is for incoming mail. Outgoing mail is sentat the post office downtown. The letter cost me $14 in postage and arrived in the USA three weeks later. It was a letter in response to the SSI letter that was postmarked in the USA four weeks previously. It was the confirmation of status letter we were discussing on another thread. Turn around time total was 7 weeks. Normal experience. Hope this helps.

I agree with Hcrabtree. I've been reading these posts for several years and have to speak up. I have finally scheduled my first look-see trip because of the helpful, funny, sometimes humorous boardering on sarcastic responses garnered here. This exchange has convinced me that Ecuador would a good place to land. If one can't take a little teasing, then perhaps they should just stay where they are. I would rather have an honest, if sometimes caustic response to my questions, than just read travel magazines and expect to learn something of value. Thank you to those who take the time to respond to our silly questions. I look forward to having you as neighbors. Diana

relyondiana, Hope you have a wonderful adventure when you get here.
You're right. If you want the rose colored glasses view of Ecuador, your better off sticking to reading International Lying. If you want a straight up evaluation ( sometimes a little edgy or caustic ) then you've come to the right place.
Sometimes, those of us who try to respond to questions, tend to forget, that although we've been asked the question a thousand times, it is the first time for the inquirer. It's important for us to remember that when we give our responses.
There are, as you've noticed, a few notorious trolls on this site - who don't even live here ! There's also, several good hearted people, who don't suffer fools gladly and will, usually when provoked, verbally cut you to ribbons with razor sharp retorts. So be it !
You're right. If you can't take a little good natured kidding ,then perhaps, you shouldn't come here ( or at least shouldn't be reading the posts. )
I think you will do very well here and wish you nothing but the best. Please post your impressions when you get here. Fresh eyes and observations are always important not just to future expats and travelers but us old gringos - the operative word, unfortunately, being old. Buenos suerte !

@hcrabtree,
From my observation, I would not put CCCMEDIA in the same group as Windshadow. CCCMedia often crafts his responses carefully separating facts from opinions. I cannot say the same about Windshadow. If you consider him a "moderator" this site is doomed.
As for usefulness of this site, I would say it is more useful to the expats themselves, recommending services to each other, and it is used as a social media platform to fill their time (that's understandable).
For somebody considering moving abroad, all the information needed is available through official government sites and other private sites. The most common items are taxes, visas, real estate. From scanning the sites, not just the Ecuador sub-forum, the reasonable answer is always get professional help.
Moreover, the amplified negative/positive opinions can really positively/negatively influence one's decision. Those topics include crime, cost of living, the local people, even the weather.
Having said that, I still visit five to six sub-forums that I am interested in just to check if there are any major events.
One more thing, just because someone visits a site, that does not mean it is useful. The original intent of the site may have been information repository, from what I can see, it is actually a hangout place for old retirees.
As the Brazilian would say,
Ate logo!

The problem is that many times people are asking "Will I like it in Ecuador?" a question impossible for anyone but them to answer.
Giving opinion, giving personal experience, those things are of some value. But anything here pales along side even two weeks in Cuenca. Three months is better. As I have said many times here, form the questions AFTER you've lived here a little while.
Its truth but people ignore anything not matching their preconceptions, however ill-informed. Some manage to do that for years down here before they flee north screaming that people lied to them. They lied to themselves.
Sounds like a personal problem.
You are right about the forum being something to do - Ecuador expats, mostly retired, hanging out on the forum, tossing the baseball like Steve McQueen, in solitary, in the Great Escape.

The pot holes! How about the pipes rising out of the middle of a sidewalk, cut for convenience at about 3" from the cement.
But I do love my second home, warts and all.
New people - scan the sidewalk in front of you like your life depended on it. Your expectations of "reasonable" infrastructure will need to be re-calibrated in Ecuador.
Then on the other hand I just bought five large Cukes in the market yesterday for a dollar. The sidewalk around the market is a bit challenged tho - but after six years I don't trip....as much.
Getting back to the thread theme, you need a thick skin here, the literal to protect knees and the figurative to resist the sticks and stones flung verbally (usually by other expats)

Yes, you are so very correct. I do love cobble stones, however if one is missing, you have yourself a cobble hole. In my case, I was walking down the road through Montanita with a thick crowd - the C hole came up to fast for gringo eyes.
I'm just glad there no 3" pipes sticking right past it, as that would have made for pretty messy landing. ....May have had to call in the NTSB to inspect my gear.
Yes, Frank, for give us for we know not what we do...
Well. Actually we do, we just like the way we do it. Ok - granted.. this isn't the most polite and PC of places you may ever visit. ..But darn it, man.. it also isn't Nickelodeon either. ...As Egoless said, thick skins are good. (Not Thick Burgers.. that's is Hardee's /Carl's Jr. )
I think that your one misunderstanding is that we are, as you said, "a bunch of strangers" talking to each other. We are not.
We share, we laugh, we throw stones, we get pissed, we apologize,.. and some of us have met, some have not... but we aren't strangers.
Yes, "Sneego, Shadow, Remmy and Grasshopper" truly are just packets of data - 1s and 0s zipping thru processors, modems and appearing on your screen, causing your useless dismay. (I am not being rude; ((and I can be)) I am only saying that your dismay is useless... that's all.
You have WPS. (wadded panty syndrome) ...And most of us has come down with a case of it - I have. (There are exceptions.. KM45 .. no, probably not. Sinego has a cool head too... mine adjusted a long time ago, and even Shadow and Remmy have their moments that touch us all.
When I read Rem call Shadow a Hag and WS call Remm an old drunk.... here is what I really hear: " Hey man, I'm down here too, surviving, adapting, and loving the land... so let's bash each other and vent a bit - while amusing others as we amuse ourselves... (you sorry asswhole)".
And we move right on with life. See, the thing is, this is - this is Expat Exchange. ...And as "expats" we "exchange". We're not strangers, man, and a lot of us talk either through PMs, emails and even social media.
You have the chance to join us and the fun... but without thicker skin you'll just bleed. .. lol.
Furthermore, without a sense of humor, you just won't "get it" anyway.
(As David Lopan told Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in Little China... "You were not put here to 'get it', Mr Burton" ).
Susan makes the Matrix references so I have to pick other, lesser movies.
And that brings us to our Moderator. Susan is the moderator, and she does her job well. There have been plenty of comments that have been "sealed for your safely" that you never see. But I tell you this, is she were to sterilize this forum - here is what would happen.
It would bore me. I would be bored. As a result, I wouldn't log on. I won't speak for my compadres here, but without the banter, these good folks whose words you disdain would likely leave (the forum, not Ecuador)
Then, who would be here to answer the questions that DO get addressed? ...and most of them do - and a lot of help, I mean a LOT of help has been offered to people who visit this site. Sue does it for free, she is a wealth of good info, she is opinionated like us all but fair.. (in fact, being our mod, I know for a fact she bites her tongue back a lot more than any of us do..lol)
One last thing - I know for a fact there are a lot more folks who come to read the threads and never comment (so we never "see" them) and many do so as much for the entertainment as they do for helpful info. Who are we to deprive them of that?
To summarize, I'll say this. Hopefully there will never BE a summarization. Long live "us" !!
Bien dia Hopp

The forum is like those old backyards (in the states) where three or four properties met at an intersection of fences. Kids and pets had their openings low and hidden by bushes. Adults were usually tall enough for eye contact and conversation over worn fence slats. The stories they told would not have been suitable for Chamber of Commerce presentations. It was all truth, but a neighbor knows a lot already so it needn't all be said. Not surprising the kidding and kicking seems rude to a stranger. The familiar can numb the senses given time but a couple of slaps gets the blood going and wakes the nerves. Sometimes when the doorbell rings and another stranger arrives with a question, out of sheer boredom, we meet them in our underwear. Not rude, informal. We could direct them to a guy in suit and tie. He has an office down the street. A smile on his lips, a pen in one hand and a contract in the other. He will conform to your expectations. I will not. I'll be honest with you though. Quiet your mind, truth often whispers.

It ain't easy being easy going on this forum.... and it's hard to avoid not getting stuck when you're surrounded by a bunch of prickly cactus. Those of us who've hung around here awhile have gotten used to each other. We're familiar with each other's writing styles, our picks and pans, when we're serious and when we are pulling someone's leg. Unfortunately, we sometimes forget that what we write and how we write it can be easily misinterpreted by those unfamiliar with us. Our best intentions can be misconstrued leading to bruised egos and unintended consequences.
On the other hand, there are Trolls and PIA's who on occasion, ( sometimes all too often ) show up on these posts and cause strong, and well deserved, reactions from our regular contributors.
We aren't afraid to tell you where the bear s**t in the buckwheat ! It's one of the many reason some of us are expats. We're not afraid to express ourselves.
Susan (our moderator) always talks about the difference between the Upper Forum and the Lower One. To be quite frank, I don't pay any attention to which is which. If you have a question it doesn't matter with Level you're on... if we can answer it - even if it's been asked and answered a thousand times before - we realize that for you it is a NEW question - and we will try to the best of our ability to either answer in open forum or ( often in my preference ) by PM, if necessary, or email.
You WILL be answered. Some people don't like the answers we give because it didn't fit their preconceptions of Ecuador and life here, or because we required the questioner to be more specific because some of us may be psycho but we're not psychic ! Final point. If one of us does strike a positive or negative chord with you, don't be afraid to us the PM ( Private Message ) system to contact us directly and let us know WHAT YOU REALLY THINK ! ( sorry for the caps, this site won't italicize ),

K45 What the hell are you rambling on about? You don't need to explain things that everyone gets. Some people just come here to pee on your leg. I especially like the ones that come and say, "Where is a really nice place to stay and watch the volcano erupt?" OH, that would be the ABC Hostal. It is a short walk back a trail and across a little bridge over a stream. Excellent food, costs $6 per night, and has beautiful nude housekeepers. Then they respond, "That won't work for me, I don't have any legs asshole!" Well burn me with hot lard Beotch, you might want to mention that first! Ok, let's see, second best for a person with no legs might just be "The DEF Hostal", and it costs $8 per night, it is handicap equipped, has lots to see, has tame monkeys, iquana, and sweet Osos that hang around the hotel pool. It sits by a cliff with fast running water.... "Are you stupid or what? I have a fear of heights and wild animals ever since my father used to rape me, cut of my legs and fed them to the wild animals in Los Angles CA!" Oh, sorry, I didn't know. I feel your pain! "Feel my pain, you are disgusting Windshadow, how dare you make fun of my missing legs, and you are a homophobic jerk that voted for Trump!. They should ban you from this site." Ok, now the gloves are starting to come off and .... This happens all the time. You at first try to help but the story changes, it gets more and more stupid, and at some point you just want to stab them about a hundred times in the ass with a hat needle! I digress!

And you said K was rambling?
Damn, Windy - I want whatever it is you're smoking. ..Remember, "puff puff pass"
Bogart whatever that is and you'll end up...
well, wanting to poke people with hat pins for one.. a definite sign of overtoke. Next thing you know, you'll be voting for Trump or some crazy... oh wait. ...I think that already happened.
Eh, guess you can digress all you want. God knows he does - and if I have to hear him come on tv and tell me how bigly he won too many more times... I'LL be wanting to stick hat pins in people's rear ends right along with ya..
Hell it might help more to poke them in my own butt. ... sorta distract me from losing my damned mind.. if that's still an option.
(slim chance there, I suppose)

K45, LOL, did you get the hat needle? Only us that have been around for a while even know what that is. I remember when we were little kids my older brother took one and stuck a lady in the rear end with one while she was at a church altar praying. People used to go up front of the church and get down on their knees and pray at the altar. My brother probably singlehandedly changed that custom with a hat pin.

And now, with all due respect to closing the subject of poking with hat pins...
on to an even more painful subject ...
(...and a hat tip to the Author of the Title of this thread...)
Allow me to read some of my very favorite VOGON POETRY!
Your always helpful Moderator...
