Roadtrip: Cairo to Libya!

I'm looking at a map of Cairo and I noticed that a good size road (I think it is motorway 55) runs from Alexandria to the Libyan border. Has anyone ventured to Libya or close to Libya on this route? Are there any other well-traveled roads to Libya?
Also, I want to sincerely thank everyone for their great advice and insights. Thank you!

ive been on that road..a lot of fun...i went to Siwa on that road. Siwa is fantastic. close to Libya but you can't cross the border. i also have friends who did cross into Libya down in the southern part of egypt, but they did that illegally.

Hi Elizabeth, I thought you had probably been on that motorway 55 before. :) Is it safe for a female traveling by herself to rent a car and drive motorway 55 to Siwa. Not that I wouldn't rather take a roadtrip with friends...I was just curious.
One more thing..I sent you two emails last week, but they were both sent back to me as "undeliverable" after 8 hours. Just thought I'd let you know...maybe it's on my end.

That is odd about the bouncing emails...try this one:

Truly I would not recommend going to Siwa alone. Siwa is an amazing place but don't forget you are talking about a village where women are not allowed out of their houses without a male escort. You will be treated differently and maybe not completely friendly. Also, if you broke down on the road from Alex, you could have problems. A friend of mine told me an awful story about his car breaking down on a barren highway and a trucker who stopped offered to pay for the "use" of one of his female passengers.

P.S. yesterday I was walking home from work at 5:30 p.m. in my office attire and some guy followed me in his car, pulled over, got out and whipped out his Johnson and started jacking off in front of me. Indeed.

Elizabeth, I figured that it wouldn't be a smart idea for me to travel to Siwa on my own. For that matter, I'm sure many road trips or travel plans shouldn't be ventured alone. Thanks for the advice...I'm listening!
I can't believe some guy masterbated in front of you! What was the reaction of other people....or were you the only one that had to witness this? Ugh!!!

There wre two guys there called bawabs (you will learn about these guys..they are doormen essentially)..anyway, bawabs are usually very helpful but these guys just sat there and when they finally came over to see what I was screaming about, the guy was gone.

Apparently I have angered some Egyptians by my honesty, so let me just tell you that I do like it here. There are some beautiful places in this country - particularly Luxor, Aswan, the Sinai, the oases, and most people here are extremely nice and it is an inexpensive place to live and it is easy to find work if you are a foreigner. So, it is not that I have anything against Egypt. The problem lies with its conservative (and somewhat repressive) culture that turns the men into idiots sometimes. But for me, I have no regrets in coming here and to be honest, I will leave Egypt a much, much stronger person than when I arrived. I am giving you this kind of advice because I wish someone had given it to me before I came here. It would have saved me some tears and misunderstanding.
