adet66 for sure they will try to take three months from you and will want a lease the shorter the term the higher the rate.
protect yourself make sure everthing form the past for the flat/apartment is current.
make sure every thing works or is fixed prior to puting pen to paper or you will suffer.
note any type of damaged on the contract. do you know anybody here, can your office help you with these issues.
where will you be working must it be a 4x4.
you must be carefull when doing deals for an apartment.
you should most likely also have a driver do to the laws here.
who you with and what type of work if you can.
im form the us have been here about 17 years. you should be able to contact me thru my profile.

its not a matter of being able to drive.you dont really want to be a driver here and hit livestock in the countryside.
what general area will you work in and how long is your term. as chrysler has a factory here and does build/assemble some jeeps here.
buying may work better in the longer term.
good used cars sell pretty well here and vehicles retain their value.you can sell it on your way out if its not duty free.
has your company done other builds here?

yep companies been there a while doing utilities works around the entire of cairo , dnt get the choice of a driver so its not really on the cards. They say they will source the car and as theyre us based i guess will be a jeep ,why are the roads so worrying there?? afganistan, sudan were over hyped really and nigeria was a hoot there are no rules there at all even the side of the road to use or footpaths it was common place to see trucks driving down the central reservation at 50 kmh and taxis at the same speed on the paths . i KNOW ITS A CROWDED CITY EC T BUT NEEDS MUST .

car hire is expensive especially if you want a 4x4 it could cost $1000 per month. Most expats use drivers, the driving here is really bad. I have driven in Nigeria and it is much worse here. You will want to live close to work unless you like spending a lot of time in traffic. Try and get your company to take out the lease for your apartment and pay the deposit as most agents want one month rent just to arrange the tenancy and often the owner wants a further two/three months as a deposit. I used Coldwell Banker after wasting a couple of weeks with other agents, at least they showed me properties that were suitable. Check out the BCA clubs who can give you some good advice and are a great place to escape the madness which is Cairo. Welcome to Egypt

I have traveled from Lagos to the Niger border, the driving in Egypt can be compared to that of Nigeria, the shear volume is much worse, no one abides by the rules, roads in Egypt are much more crowded, speed is a factor as well.
When night driving lights are optional. Lots of big trucks hauling massive loads of stone, large and small buses by the hundreds, taxi's and motorcycles by the thousands, and donkey carts all in the same 4 lanes with locals darting into the traffic running like crazy to the other side of the road or standing in large groups on the road waiting for transportation. Oh, and backing up and driving down the wrong side of the road is normal. Nothing to have a 10-20 car pileup.
Same concept be offensive rather than defensive and be careful. Once here you will understand why they don't bother to look to the left or right it won't matter they are just trying to keep from hitting the guy in front of them. What they don't see won't hurt them. God is their co-pilot.
Within the confines of Maadi (a major Ex-Pat area) you can compare to Victoria Island.
Make sure your horn works.
Enjoy your stay in Egypt they are friendly, some English is spoken most everywhere, and they are great hospitable people.
FYI drivers are reasonably cheap.

I used to live in Maadi.have moved to shorook city. about twenty minuets from Cairo its much cleaner and the air is better.
in the past we brought our people in country then began the housing search with them.
I always did this for myself as it was coming from my funds and have made some really good deals compared to other ex-pats cost for the same area.
a good driver here will intervene into an issue on your behalf and will step forward to protect you when and if needed.
we tried to train these guys to keep our people from harms way.
these types of drivers are hard to find. the people i do contract work for also work all over Egypt and some of the drivers have relationships with police and military authority's that can come in handy. we only have a need for two currently.these guys have been with us since 92 and really are an asset to be used we always tended to over pay them a bit but it is a case of getting what you pay for.
the company had a program come to an end a couple of months ago after about seven years. our next program is about a year or more away.
Im currently doing some consulting within the paint sector. for some of the egyptain manufacturing base.
