I need some help and am new to this expat resource. I am a 23 yr old female and am moving in August to Cairo to teach at the American International School. I have decided to live in Maadi but am having trouble figuring out the best way to find WHERE in Maadi I want to live, and a great (nice) apartment. I want a one bedroom or studio since I am by myself. Any suggestions about apartments or anything else would be appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to Egypt: Electricity here in Cairo is 220v so bringing your digital camera, computer, Ipod things from America you will need a two-prong plug adapter to Three-prong plugs as over here wall sockets are 2 prong, second you will need a transformer (converts 220v to 110v) bring one with you. With regards to shopping City Stars mall in Heliopolis (Nasr City) is mega mall and a great grocery store on the first floor…
The best of luck Zak

Hi Farwellk,
Most of Maadi is ideal for ex-pats, in fact it is the big ex-pat area and you are more likely to see western faces there than you would in other areas. To this extent, you are more likely to pay a bit more for things as the local tradesmen up their prices for foreigners. Even so you will be amazed at the prices. There are some great blogs dealing with living in Cairo and if you are on Facebook may I reccomend BCA Egypt as a group to join. The BCA is the British club but has a massive international presence and therefore is the meeting place for ex-pats from all over the world. The Facebook group is also an ideal place to ask your questions directly to people who already live in Maadi. (Remember to click on BCA + Others to see the posts). I don't personally live in Maadi, preferring the more authentic Egyptian atmosphere of Heliopolis but I agree with Zak that City Stars is the place to shop or go for great food in a modern atmosphere, but please try out original Egyptian restaurants and shops as these are amazing places to go and give you memories that will last your life. The main thing is to remember that you are not at home and try not to compare with home. I know some expats who do nothing but cmpare and complain and they end up hating the expat experience. So I hope you have a great time here and please feel free to ask me for any info at any time :-)
Eddie

Hello farwellk keeping you posted my oldest daughter is 23 beautiful American and the most common trouble she have had when visiting Cairo though is, no matter what will be loosing your heart to some Egyptian man. Much more likely than loosing your wallet, but don't let down your guard. The ones looking for you to let them steal your heart have your wallet in mind as well, so keep a close hold on both of them.

I'd like to echo what Eddie said, I too live in Helio, but have many friends in Maadi. Degla, Rd. 9 seem to be the most preferred areas along with Maadi grand mall area. Finding a small one bedroom is more difficult, most apartments will offer at least two bedrooms, one bedrooms are scarce. Good luck.

Hi Farwellk,

I am currently living in Spain and my apartment (Degla Maadi) will be free for rent - fully furnished - as of the end of the third week of August. Drop me a line at nash_s@aucegypt.edu. I am an English teacher as well and if you're renting I can leave you some resources behind and not have to worry about taking all my stuff with me.

Best,
Nashwa

Good day,

We are moving there in October from South Africa. We were recently there to view some places for our family.

As an expat the best place to live in the beginning is Maadi Sariaat, it's an expat community and also very close to the school you'll be teaching at. There are also many places available for rent.

You can either contact Osman group, or ERA (Baha Mohammed -Facebook) to assist you with this.

Hope this helps!!

Hello there,
I just subscirbed today to this forum.
I have a 2 bedroom, fully furnished flat in Maadi that would be perfect for you. It is opposite to Maadi Hotel, has a beautiful view to the Nile, dining & living room, one and a half bathroom and a spacious kitchen.
I currently live in the States but can arrange for my sister to show you the flat. If you are all by yourself, the rent will be LE2800 for the first year.
Please email me at battasoda@hotmail.com if you would like me to email you some photos of the flat.
Thank and Good luck.

Hi Cathy. We are moving to Cairo in January/February next year. How have you settled in? Is there a health shop in Cairo? One of the things that I am worried about as we are "health freaks". Would it be a problem to courier vitamins etc from SA to Cairo every month? Sorry to bombard you.
