Where to Live - Maadi or Heliopolis

Post New Topic

I am going to teach at AIS in Cairo in August. I will probably be older than most of the other teachers, though probably have more energy than most. Am trying to decide whether to live in Maadi or Heliopolis. Have live in the Mid-East before. Which would be better for closeness to school yet still being part of the historic experience. Like to workout and do art stuff.

I think Nasr City can be a good option , too. It is near to the 5th settlement where the AIS is located (If we are talking about the same branch).
I know some friends who rent out their places , if you need any help , drop me a line :)

Cairo is an amazing and exciting city to live in. My experience so far, is that each area, and sometimes whole neighborhoods, within Cairo, are a city unto themselves. Each with it's own charms and offering a variety of activities within that particular neighborhood. I have stayed in Maadi before, more than once, renting an apartment there with my Husband. We more recently rented 2 different apartments in the Roxy area of Heliopolis. And there is a very nice sports club near Roxy Square. Sports club are all over Cairo. The famous Gazira Sporting Club (near 6th October bridge) is in the center of activity, and has many activities to choose from. It isn't difficult to find a place to work out. Even for a very small fee, or free, you can get permission to use the gym or weights area within the nicer hotels within Cairo. Some of the nicer apartment buildings also have their own workout area. As far as where to live, if you are looking for the real experience, don't live in an expat neighborhood. Maadi is a ways away. In my experience, I would say sometimes, about 30 minutes drive from city center in heavy traffic. But still easy by car or taxi to get where you need to go. Heliopolis definitely has a lot to offer. Zamalek is quiet and clean, but is going to possibly be more expensive. but there are still bargain rentals here and there. I don't know if this info will help you, but I can tell you this, Usama is an honest and fair business man, and I have personally done business with him. He arranged for 2 different rental apartments for my Husband and I. Be specific about what you want, and he will surely do his best to help locate a nice place for you. And in your price preference, where and when ever possible. For you or anyone reading the forum threads, who might have future need of rentals, you will find you will want to rent a 2 bedroom, even if you are single, living alone, and not even sharing a place with room mates. Hope I have offered some information that is useful to you. Enjoy life in wonderful, amazing Cairo!

Hello Usama

I have a one of a kind property on road 90 across from Downtown mall in New Cairo. I am looking to rent it out to either multinational companies or expats only.

You can find details on http://www.wix.com/sama67/sami-dajani-1

I have a preference to rent out all four floors to one client.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions or to schedule a tour.

Sami

Hello Christi, I am from the city of Mexico and recently lived in Cairo Egypt I wish someone had warned me of how horrible the place and people are. Christi, I suggest you run.... run like Forrest Gump and don't look back!!! I will never return to that place and I will make sure that I warn people about it.

Heliopolis if you want to experience the life of Egyptian middle - high class with real stuff and blend with local fun people, Maadi if you want to keep the expat life on and always be surrounded by fellow foreigners , but the good news is that I have rooms available in both maadi degla and heliopolis sheraton , you can communicate on amrhilmy @ msn . I'm in the exact same situation having lived in Heliopolis on all my stays while on longer holidays, I think that as a woman with a child that Maadi would be far easier for us. Heliopolis or Maadi? All thought I find myself in another situation as I will be self sustained in terms of income from another country and am sole care taker of a child.

We will most likely relocate next year to one of these locations, but my gut feeling at least for the first year, and considering the schools close by, Maadi is my best bet the first year at least.

If anyone has comments to my thoughts, pls feel free to enlighten me :)
