Hello,
I am moving to Cairo this October and am a registered nurse here in the US. I understand that nursing in Egypt is not held in high esteem as it is in the states; nor does the licensing really work out unless it's a private school. I have not had luck finding work as a school nurse (which is why I am coming later than when the school year starts).
Yes, I have looked at the World Health Organization and other NGOs but my problem seems to be that I do not really write or read Arabic (yet!). I speak it enough to get by but these are some of the reasons I am moving there!
I am open to private nursing duty, teaching, etc. Any ideas or leads greatly appreciated.
Take care!

Best of luck! LOTS of nurses here in the same boat as you. I think there may be loads of volunteer opportunities for you, or opportunities to make your own work. If I were you I would come up with a business plan (what you will do, how you will market yourself, what you will charge) and start with that. The nurses I've seen that do that sort of thing seem to be as successful at supporting themselves as anyone. I would not come unless you have enough savings to support yourself for about a year while you get something going. Don't mean to be negative on the subject, but felt the need to be realistic.

Thanks for the information!
Great idea! I guess I'll need to learn more Arabic first if I'm going to run a little business...
Yes, I will have some savings and a free place to live for a while even :) Thanks for looking out and giving me a reality check though!

Do you know any Egyptian doctors at the hospital where you work now? Or do any of your doctor freiends know Egyptian doctors? There are so many Egyptian doctors working abroad that you might. If you do, ask them if they have family or friends in Egypt in the business that would be able to help you find a job. It could be another "it's who you know, not what you know" that will get you a job.

You might not have to learn Arabic to run a business if you can figure out how to market what you want to sell to an English speaking clientele...be they foreigner or just English speaking Egyptians, or hire someone that can translate for you.

Hello, Marie, I left the States and health care in 2009 after 25 years in nursing and I've had no problems supporting myself. All you truly need is a BA/BS and be a native speaker. Many language centers don't even require that. I did get certified in TEFL but many foreign teachers I know don't have that. Many language centers are only too happy to have a native speaker on board. I don't even speak enough Arabic to get myself in trouble and for sure I don't read and write it; that's not a big deal. You will need a lot of patience with this culture, though; they have a very different set of priorities and social situations usually get in the way of everything. I am teaching at a school, a language center, and I have private students, so although I am not extremely wealthy, I manage to support myself and fly back home every year for a 2 month vacation. If you need more information, just contact me here and I will be glad to share what I know.

Habibah, Do you mind sharing what school you teach for, and what they pay/compensation for teaching there is? Do they pay for your flat? Your ticket home each year? Finding a good school that actually pays their teachers is a GOOD thing, so I'd like to know which school you are with. Don't worry, I have NO interest in teaching English or any other language, but am interested in the information. Thanks.

677monroe - LOL... sorry to laugh, and you will kick yourself when you see this (I hope), but look at that post again. It says you need a BA / BS.
In other words, a COLLEGE DEGREE. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. I'm guessing you don't have one yet, yeah? ;)

There is a service called Care with Love that offers in home nursing care. I don't know how trained the nurses are. I mean if your mother requires IVs and other medical devices, you'll have to research it more than what I can tell you about. A few years ago we hired one of their people to stay the night with my sister while she recovered from some surgery. It was affordable and the care was adequate for what we needed. Start here (http://www.cwlegypt.org/) and Google them yourself for more information if you need it.
Best of luck.

Two women that I know that do/did similar work knew/know no Arabic to speak of. There is probably a large enough need in the Expat community or bi-lingual Arabic Community to make a living. The problem is ,meeting the people that need your help and marketing yourself. Also, it just occurred to me that not having a car or being able to move around the city with confidence might be a road block too. Cairo is NOT an easy city to navigate. I guess UBER might become your best friend in this case.
