Hi,
I will be moving to Cairo in October with my family. I understand that cars are prohibitively expensive to purchase due to import duty. Was wondering if anyone can advise how much it costs to rent different types of vehicles for say 6 months to a year? Probably looking for some type of 4/4.

I don't work in the oil business in any way shape or form, but do know that many oil people get 4X4 rigs from their employer for work purposes. I don't know who you will work for but I'd be checking with them first to see if they don't get good deals on rentals like this.
Or you might find an email address for some one in HR from BG (British Gas) or BP, Shell or others that might be able to help you figure out where they get their cars from. Good luck. I know it's possible, but can't give you specifics. IF you will be here with diplomatic rights, then you may well be able to buy a rig from someone leaving as they are always looking for someone to buy their "duty free" vehicles and of course the rest of us can't buy them from them.

Another suggestion is to join the Cairo Hash House Harriers page on Face Book and ask if there are any people there that can answer your question about this. Since the Hash is almost always run in the desert, having a 4x4 is popular with Hashers, and many of these people come and go and may either rent their vehicles or will want to sell one eventually.
FYI - The Hash has NOTHING to do with Smoking Hash - it is instead the drinking club with a running problem. If you've lived over seas before, you may have run into them in other countries.

Car rental is also expensive , a salon style car 3000le to 4000le per month. As for a 4x4 upwards of 10,000 .
Another option is to buy a new car , one that is very popular here so easy to sell .Second hand cars really hold there value here .
