Hi Everyone
I have been offered a position in Egypt based in Cairo. I don't have a very good track record when it comes to being in the wrong place( I was blown in Iraq)
Can anyone tell me exactly what it is like living and working in Cairo. I will be staying in Al rehab and working in an office close by.
My family are concerned about the security situation and are worried regarding kidnappings and other threats. I have worked all over Egypt previously but not since the Arab spring and all the issues with ISIS.
Can anyone give me advice to put my mind at rest

I don't know where you are from or why you figure you'd be such a target for kidnappings and such.
Are you tremendously well known? Wealthy? High powered and in a high position in a company like an oil company? A journalist with an agenda the government might take issue with?
If any of those are true, then it's possible you could be worth kidnapping by the knuckleheads that want money or to stifle your written word. The vast majority of us foreigners here don't fall into those catagories and we are perfectly fine.
I live in a compound just a bit further out than Rehab. Once you see Rehab you'll see it is just a calm little suburb. Calm may not be exactly the right word as its pretty busy these days. If your company will consider putting you in Madinaty (where I am) instead, it's even better. It's further from town but quieter and newer. There is a bus to Rehab running every 30 minutes. Both Rehab and Madinaty were developed by the same company so they work well together hand in hand.

If you do end up in Rehab, don't be afraid. There are lots of foreigners living there. Rehab has buses going into the city, I think, every 20 minutes so you can always go into town for activities and such. We have Uber taxis if you're nervous about using normal taxis or the bus and you've got a good pay check. Heck if you're really a kidnapping target, no doubt you'll have your own car and driver assigned to you so no worries.

Seriously - unless you fall into any of the catagories mentioned above, you'll be fine. Cairo is not Baghdad by any stretch. And thank God Egypt is not Libya or Syria.

Let us know when you arrive. ??

As long as u live in El Rehab and ur work will be close to u, then it is not a problem at all. You will be safe at home, private transportation for the compound, job and even going out at night.
Best regards in your new life ;)

Hi

I am moving to Cairo next month and have been asked to choose where I would like to live. My Job is based in Madinaty but I have been told that Al Rehab has a bit more life about it.

Could you please tell me any information about the 2 places:

Is Madinaty still being built?
What facilities and amenities are there?
What is the commute like between the 2 by bus?
How early do the buses start?
Are there expat communities in either city?

Thank you for your help. :)

I live in Madinaty and love it. I assume you'll be teaching at one of the schools here?

Rehab is about 20-30 minutes by bus. Rehab is older and more established fir sure bit it's not as nice. How old are you? What do you want to do in your free time? I'm not certain you'd love living in either one of you want a social life, but Rehab will be a bit easier for a social life as there are more transportation options available from there.

If you want and have a Facebook Account, ask to join Expats in Madinaty and you can ask other Expats living here what they think.

Thank you for getting back to me. Are tge buses reliable and do you know what time they start in the morning.

Yes I am a teacher and I would like to be close to restaurants, cafes and shops for a social life. I am 25 and would also like to join sports and social clubs. Are there football leagues and clubs?

I will do. Thank you for the advice.
