I have a home in El Salvador and I plan to return theren to live 6 months of the year.
I have a friend who live there and he told me to get a visa rentista when I get there so I will not have to pay import duty on a car and also up to $25,000 of household goods.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

It is not a Visa, it is Residencia Rentista and it will take a while in Migracion. First you need your Birth Certificate certified (Apostille) in an El Salvadorian consulte in US or Canada if you live there, then you need to bring a good conduct (Police) Report from your hometown, then there are more and more forms, anything in English now has to translated by a CERTIFIED trnslator in El Salvador. For Residency you need an income from the USA (Stocks and Bonds do not count) of minimum $1,000 a month either a pension or Social Security or both, all that has to certified by the US Embassy and then translated into Spanish So if you are srious start by certifying your Birth Certificate, getting your police report and all other documents you feel you may need. I live here a long time...no one likes Migracion E mail me anytime salbiztours@yahoo.com

It is not really that hard. A good friend of mine from Europe who has a summer house in El Salvador, just got it.

Next time you are in ES, pick up a leaflet with the requisites at an immigration office (no need to go to the main office, they are available at Galerias, Multiplaza, etc.), get all the required docs (translations can be done locally, and there is no "registry of accepted translators").

Once you have everything, go personally to immigration, it will probably be faster than hiring a lawyer to do it.

Good luck
