Residency in El Salvador

Does anyone know the exact steps to take to become a resident?
All I've been told so far is that you either need to have a job offer or marry a Salvadorean.
My goal is to open a small English school on my own. I really don't want to work for someone else anymore, unless I really have to.
I've heard stories of people opening surf shops and bars along the beach.
How did they do this?
Did they have to work for someone first?

Please Help!
Andrea
(I'm in the process of obtaining my birth certificate and a good conduct certificate from the police)

Hi Andrea,
I believe there is a visa/residence for investors and I think this is what most foriengers who don't marry or have salvadorian blood use. Also make sure you get your documents certified by homeland security in the US before coming. It used to be that you could have birth certificates authenticated here at the ministry of foriegn affairs, but since 9/11 only documents authenticated by Homeland security are accepted.
Good luck and let me know when you get here, I live in Suchitoto.
Saludos

Marrying a Salvadorian is a plus in that you can put the business in their name, obtaining a business residency is a long and tedious process download all the requirements in English on http://www.proesa.com.sv/visa_req.htmlYour birth certificate and police report require the apostille or authentication from The Salvadorian Consulate nearest to your place of birth, everything must be then translated by a certified translator in El Salvador only.
If you already have a work permit, then you are already a "temporary" resident.

Hi Robert,
I arrived in Santa Ana in March.
I'm looking into this Investor's Visa, thank you.
I contacted the police depatment where I live in the States and they are mailing me a notorized copy of the police report. But when I go home in July, I will have this document and my birth certificate certified properly. Thanks again...

Hi Pato,

Wow! This is what I've been looking for. Thank you so much!
Funny you mention Proesa, I found their website during one of my MANY searches for information.
Currently I'm only here on a tourist visa, and am researching all possible ways of living and working here permanently. My goal is to open a small school to teach English.
And as soon as I am brave enough to take these busses on my own, I would love to meet with you in San Salvador.

Thank you SO much for all this information!
Andrea

Hi, I have also though to living in El Salvador to teach or do anything. But I would prefer to teach. I was just there two weeks ago. I am very much interested in working there. Please let me know how your plan to open school. I'd ve interested in being your first employee. Although, I am a special education therapist. I am very much interested. I went to Padre Vito, a school for handicapped individual. They said I can pretty much work there whenever I want, though it will be, I think for pro bono. Well, we'll see what happens.
