Bringing a car into the country

Hello everybody. I heard from a retired person in ES that one (if retired) can bring a car into the country every 3 years. Is that accurate?

I assume you're talking about importing cars? You can import a car into the country whenever you want, you just have to pay the taxes. I have been told that when you get your residency, you're allowed to import one vehicle duty free, but haven't checked that out. You can't import anything that's older than 8 years. Considering that the car dealerships here are a powerful force (and the ones behind the 8 year rule) I'd be shocked if they let you bring a car in every three years duty free, if that's what you're implying :)

Thanks for your reply. I know you have to pay taxes and the car should be no older than 8 years. My question is more related to retired people who choose to live in El Salvador. A person I met told me he imported the car duty free and could bring a new car every three years duty free. Is that the case?

Again, I've only heard from a very unreliable source that rentistas can bring in ONE car duty free when they get their residency. It would be shocking to me that the wealthy and powerful people who own the car dealerships or the government here would allow anyone (retired or not), especially foreigners, who, in their minds, can afford to pay taxes or buy a new car from the dealership, to bring in a car duty free every three years. Really the only way to find out is to go to someone at the aduana at an entry point, talk to someone high up there, get something in writing and hope when you bring the car through, hope that person is there. And if you wait until July, everyone will change and likely so will the rules when the new government comes into power. Now, if you want to bring a car in and pay taxes, that's a well-set procedure that you should have no problem with. Good luck!
