I am retired, I get social security and I have significant savings. I am visiting El Salvador in April assuming my next cancer screen comes back clear. I want to rent a house on the beach for a week and spend some of that week looking at properties to buy. I will be bringing my wife and maybe my two older brothers if it is relatively safe to travel in ES. The wife and I are experience travelers in central America. We have been visiting for years and it is always much safer than the headlines claim. I am concerned about gangs, volcanoes, storm surge from the ocean. Anyone have any recommendations for me?

Come, definitely don't worry about volcanoes(yes we did have one that sent some ash into the air around New Years) very rarely do we have problems with storm surge and most rentals are back from the beach. Gangs stick to killing themselves and don't really trouble travelers.
For your exploring/traveling hire someone whether it be someone like myself that offers tours or just a driver/guide or rent a car. If you need an idea of different beach areas both to retire to or to stay on this trip feel free to write.
You will want to check out places like Suchitoto(at least an overnight) Ruta de Flores, Mayan sites, La Palma San Salvador and if on the East coast Alegria, Jiquilisco and Perquin. Whatever you do I can pretty much guarantee you and the family will enjoy El Salvador(I have for the last 20 yeas, not retired)

"Don't worry, be happy!" And native Salvadorans in general are happy and friendly people who love to help foreign visitors, doubt you will see a "Gang Member" on your whole trip and we are in dry season through April 2014, so no flooding!!! A Salvadoran friend in the city and I have assisted several members of this forum in past to rent in city or at beach at fair prices, using the Classifieds both online and in the 2 major daily Newspapers (best day for Ads, Monday also Wednesday) in Spanish, of course, purchase or rent directly from owner,,, do you Read, Understand and Speak Spanish? If relocating, necessary to learn the basics! Don't become dependent on English speaking people, you wind up paying double, includes some of our fellow "Ex Pats" here,( I will be more than happy to meet with you and assist you in finding a Rental or Purchase at Beach or in countryside) in San Salvador, a friend from USA married to a Salvadoran has a very inexpensive hotel and hostel here and the Salvadoran Manager, who speaks basic English, provides transport/tours to guests upon request FB page https://www.facebook.com/Hostal.Cumbres.del.Volcan in English Double rooms from $10 pp in the safest and most upscale part of the City! As well have Magic Jack and able to call you for free if you are in US, cel or land line, if interested PM me your contact info, as well do know rpbroz for many years, very honest and is Director of a couple non profit causes in Suchitoto as well as running a Bar, Hostel and Tour Operation and neither he nor I will pressure you into renting or buying any type of Real Estate just point you in the right direction. for a nice overview of El Salvador click on http://www.wtf-elsalvador.com/ by Ex Pats and Natives for Tourists and Travelers. I moved here in 1994 from Guatemala and have never been 'mugged' here, a few times I did not use common sense and lost some small things, twice I lost my cellphone, left it in a friends Cybercafe! got it back, ESV will never be a Costa Rica, and there are NO "All Ex Pat" Gated Communties here, Gated communities here in ESV are called "Residenciales" and all or most of your neighbors will be locals, practice your Spanish! Best of Luck! Buena suerte.

Thank you for your helpful responses. Maybe I tell you a bit more about me and what I am looking for. I had cancer 2 years ago, they think they have me cured. I am retired, get social security. I want to relocate to central america to live out my life. Wife and I seek a small town, fishing village maybe, we want a house with wall around. To keep our dogs in, not to keep people out. :) We like meeting new people. We are open and friendly. We love to fish, but prefer to fish on a river or lake. The ocean is too rough. We want to come visit ES, see the sight, meet the people, enjoy the food, and look at available ocean front homes for long term rental or purchase.

Hi,
Playa San Diego is an up and coming community where it's still possible to find cheap, large lots right on the beach. It's also away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy towns. Rancho Cajun is a house for rent on the beach, the owner also does real estate and has other houses around the beach for rent. Her name is Dianne. The only email I have for her is dianne.blanchet@facebook.com but if you google Rancho Cajun Playa San Diego El Salvador, you'll find her vrbo (along with lots of other rental options) and a way to directly email or call her. Luckily ES is super small so whether you want to fish, surf check out some amazing history or anything else it's all just a few hours drive away. Good luck!
