The husband and I are retired and will be making our first trip to El Salvador first half of November this year. We're going to be staying at a hotel on the Pacific Ocean side - Decameron Salinitas. Any suggestions as to day trips? And any suggestions as to reliable honest locals who do day tours? ANY info would be appreciated as this will be our first trip to this area.

Hello:

I live in Canada again now, but really loved El Salvador. There is, of course, cinder block and tin shack poverty that you don't see in the first world, but the majority of people are wonderful, the little comedor restaurants on every corner in the city are absolutely fabulous (and the price of about $4.00 for a huge wonderful steak dinner is great). Tourism industry in El Sal is a bit difficult to find! You can try the following website: www.mayatriangle.com - they offer city and beach tours.
Also, run by a nice lady: www.facebook.com/elsalvadortravelplan?fref=ts
Another site to check out: www.wtf-elsalvador.com (this site lists all up to date events happening with full info)

The little colonial towns are nice. I really liked Concepcion de Ataco - Ataco for short - gorgeous murals EVERY where in the town. Suchitoto is a very sleep colonial town with cobblestones everywhere (don't wear heels!). If you go to Suchitoto they have a fab restaurant called "Fonda El Mirador" overlooking a wonderful body of water and lush forest. There is a turtle sanctuary not too far from Decameron - I never had the pleasure of seeing it but I have heard about it. There is a volcano in San Salvador that you can climb up - El Bocaron. As with any country you are not familiar with, just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Go with your instincts! I hope you have a wonderful trip.

My local colleagues tell me that two weeks is a Very Long Time to spend at the Decameron. Some day trips are possible, but living there will not be a positive Salvadoran experience. See if you can spend some time in San Salvador. It's more central for trips with more to do in the city.

to be in Decameron for two weeks is Too mucho...is like being caged...visit places like Juayua, explore las rutas de las flores, lately there are so many Rutas, I think for me r. de las Flores is my favorite, there are also other places that you can rent: http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/central-america/el-salvador

Just be safe, common sense applies, no bling, bling.

Hi the decameron resort offers the easy tours at a decent price. If interested in more personalized service look for me at gringo tours, Francisco Tobar who can be found online as the Extreme Tour or my friend Benjamin Rivera. If Birders Benjamin and I would be your best option. Be open to spending a night or two away from the resort and that opens up options like Suchitoto where I have been living for the past 10 plus years, the impossible park on an overnight is also an option and for civil war history if interested Perquin, all difficult to do on day outings.
For personalized full day outings(10/14 hours) expect to pay from $150-$250 for groups of up to 3.
Enjoy El Salvador and if you need any further information feel free to send a pm to rpbroz@gmail.com
