Looking to move abroad in the new year with my husband.
But, we have some questions. We traveled to Costa Rica recently and it was too much like america and there were few jobs available for us.
I am currently a teacher and he is a boat mechanic / in school finishing his AA degree.
Our first question is. Is it better to drive or fly?
Then, we want to live a "normal" life in el salvedor standards. Are there jobs for us?
Plus my husband would like to be close to surf.
Any ideas and/or comments !?!

Straight forward answer: Fly. It's safer.

School jobs? Lowest paid jobs in El Salvador next to call centers. Around $200 a month. (200)

Boat mechanic? I'm sorry. There is only a handful of people that are able to afford a luxury boat.

Most of the fishermen fix them themselves.

I didn't know Paraguay had surf/beaches. Did they take some land from Argentina or Brazil while I was asleep???

Sorry I missed the drive/fly part, driving is perfectly safe, just take a newer vehicle as El Salvador has a 7 yr limit on the age of vehicles that can be imported.

I can assure you that international schools pay way more than $200 per month, that would be the pay at language schools.

Mechanic work would mean taking a $1.00 job away from a local, kind of a scuzzy thing to do.

I believe you can get residence to El Salvador as an investor, but otherwise you can not get residence there unless you have outside income of $1000 month.

International schools are usually hiring and they pay around $2000 a month (depending on what school). If you were to work in a public school, your pay would be about $200 a month and you would need to be fluent in Spanish. All international schools are in San Salvador, which is only a 45 minutes drive from the beach and surf. Mechanics are cheap here, if your husband doesn't mind working for pennies, he could probably get a job, but would never get a visa for it. Quality isn't really a factor here, so they would just want to hire any old mechanic for the cheapest amount possible. Call center jobs are pretty highly paid for around here, $500-750 if you can stand the mind numbing work.

You can drive to ES, but it's about 3000 miles once you cross the US border (depending on where you cross) so if you want to go faster, it's better to fly. I find the drive lovely and it usually takes me about a month. I've done it before in 2 weeks and it wasn't fun. Any car you bring to ES has to be 8 years or newer (when I checked 2 years ago, at least) and the taxes are especially high on SUVs. The cheapest taxes are on pick-ups.

I'm not sure what you mean by "normal" life here. Most expats live closely to what they're used to in their home country, which, I find to be relatively the same price as back in the US - $1000-2000 a month for a secure apartment with hot water and reliable electricity, clean and about $200 a month or so for a maid. I live at the beach (where there are little to no jobs for foreigners via a visa) and have a rustic little apartment with cold water and a metal roof that gets too hot to stand inside by 7 am, BUT I only pay $100 a month and I don't have a maid. For me, sharing my space with bats, rats and cockroaches and sometimes lose electricity for hours is justified so that I can surf everyday.

If you two had Social Security and or pension amounting to plus $2,000 a Month for both of you, El Salvador would be perfect, even the Call Centers require you to be legally in El Salvador, resident with permission to work or work permit, average Salary in Call Centers $600 a Month, for 44 hours a week, Teachers in the English speaking International Schools need be certified Teachers at home and to apply 6 months in advance of School Year which begins late August as in USA, if you have money to invest and live on for a year you could open a small travel related business, the few luxury boats that are in El Salvador are docked at the Marina in Bahia de Jiquilisco, some 80 km. SE of the Capital City, I doubt there are jobs for Boat Mechanics, if you have no income nor substantial savings do not come expecting employment, especially do not sell your home stateside if you bring a vehicle you will have to matriculate it and pay high import taxes or take the vehicle out of country and return again and again. Unemployment is high here and as for teaching English in a small school with no work permit, you would have no benefits, long hours and low pay around $400 a Month or so, they have schools here that hire native speakers, pay low, benefits zero and high turnover! Many Ex Pats that come here are married to a Salvadoran, with family and connections, without those, would recommend an English speaking country where it is easier to get residency, Belize. Good luck.
