My wife and I are also interested in moving to El Salvador, but we watched a tv program recently about gang life in ES. The program told of the murder rate being the highest in the world. It also said the whole country is under gang control and the gangs charge each family a monthly fee for not robbing and killing them. I do not find that same information here on the forum. I think I shall have to go and see for myself what is the truth about life in ES.

Please don't believe everything you see on TV or read about El Salvador. While it does have some problems, they are not more severe than other countries in Central America. There are gangs here, but there are also gangs in LA, NY, Detroit, Chicago and many other places people live and travel too. For the most part, they don't have any desire to get involved with tourists unless you go out of your way to involve yourself with them. That said, there is a problem in ES, like many other developing countries with petty theft, and parts of Playa San Diego are especially bad. Ask around before you buy.

We are moving out of the Guat/El S/Hond mess (too dangerous for us)...to Nicaragua. Everybody has an antidote about friends getting robbed or a dead body in their block. Apparently some neighborhoods are OK...but for how long? Nobody seems to have a solution for the problem in California or in Central America. We have no confidence in the political leadership. Bye!

Well darn guess I'm lucky to be alive as I've lived in Playa San Diego since Nov 2010.
NEVER been robbed.
NEVER been asked to pay "'a monthly fee for not being robbed"
Obviously I am still alive as are the other dozen or so expats here in Playa San Diego although only 2 of us live here year round.
Have heard about "bad" areas of Playa San Diego but have yet to find them!
Only place you really have to watch out to keep from being robbed is the Canadian Embassy, hear the US one is just as bad. Both are best avoided as much as possible!

Well darn, I guess you are. I am glad to hear you have not met with any misfortune living ES. You know people write to this forum with what they consider to be very real and legitimate concerns. They hope to get back responses from people with first hand experience in the area. While I still do not have much evidence one way or the other about the safety of living in ES, Thanks to you I do know that Playa San Diego is a good place to avoid as it seems to be inhabited by some jerk with nothing better to do than get on this forum and make rude condescending remarks in response to peoples legitimate inquiries.

Typical US/Canadian cop response to a legitimate response to a question asked about a fantasy TV show.
Please do NOT consider Playa San Diego as we don't need your type here.
BTW Gringos are NOT allowed to own firearms in El Salvador!!!
