I am a 57 yo American and I retired to El Salvador last year. I own my own two bedroom house on the beach with a pool so I do not have rent costs. Rent can vary greatly depending on the area so you would need to research that cost. My other monthly costs are:

Water: 6.00
Electricity: 125.00
Cable/phone (landline) and internet (10GB per mo) 40.00
Food/Personal items/beer etc: 200.00
Gas: 200.00 per mo (big car for not so good roads)

If you use the local transportation this cost will be greatly reduced, but it will require use of the "chicken buses" or other local buses.

Have you visited here? Do you have local contacts in El Salvador? Do you speak Spanish? Do you plan to become a resident? Answers to these questions could increase your costs (ie non residents must leave the country every 90 days and getting residency is complicated and you WILL need Spanish)

Hope this helps. El Salvador is a lovely country and I adore it here . Good Luck

Thanks for all the info..plan on doing few months in Nicaragua next year then decide on another country following year with the hopes of retiring in one of them year around. Am learning a bit of Spanish but my 1st stop in Nicaragua will be 3-4 weeks at a Spanish language school.
I will rent for sure..hoping a decent 1 bdrm apartment around $500 and that should still leave lots

Best place to go for spanish school is antigua guatemala. Any of the central am countries have the 90 day thing. You can just fly to mexico spend a weekend and come back. The visas are 10 bucks US. If your planning on retiring here you can just go into immigration on omlympic blvd and apply. As long as you have an application in you can probably stay and apply for extensions when the tourist visa expires. You will just need proof of income.... Your pension check will suffice along with bank statements. Any documents you produce from canada will need to be authenticated and translated by a certfied translator. You need to have the documents authenticated in ottawa by the el salvadorian consulate. Also you need a long birt certicate from canada not the card. Go on line to get that. They will ask for apostulated but we dont have that in canada and they will accept the authenticated long version. If your not a big drinker, big eater and dont need to live right on the beach you can rent a 3 bedroom condo in a gated community with security a maid and a gardner, nice private parc and pool for around $500 easily. Count on around $150 for electricity if you have the air on constantly around $50 for condo fees including water. Probably around $200 a month to eat well and still have $1000 to use for transport, entertainment, medical costs.... Suggest getting cygna or blue cross they have some good hospitals here but it can be a bit of a cost if you have high medical requirements. We live in a condo where we have neibors who are doctors.... Nice friends! ;-) ... Ive been in central america 20 years, 9 in el salvador and i'm canadian.

Are you a resident there?..government health care? What town/area do you live in?
I'm guessing you've been there 9 years..must be nice
Good to know I'll be quite comfortable there if I decide to stay.thanks again
