Hi, am a single white female, european with very basic spanish. I have been offered a job in La Libertad and am going over the pros and cons as to whether to accept it.
How safe is it for someone like me? What sort of wage do I need to look at to have a decent standard of living? What is the housing like? Will I be able to safely go to the supermarket to get my shopping? go to the cinema? go to the beach? go clothes shopping etc. etc?
Any information will be gratefully recieved and anything I've not thought of please let me know.

I found El Salvador unpleasant, that was my personal experience.
There are some unsavory elements both in the locals and the expat community.
I was not safe there but you may as a working person encounter a different experience than mine

My wife and I retired here in El Salvador in 2011, we built our home here and have lived here every since. We love it here, the locals are very friendly for the most part and the expats I have met have been very nice. I have not worked here, as I said I am retired, but the people that I have met that do work here love it. As far as safety, you should always be alert and stay away from bad areas, just like anywhere else in the world, most violence is gang on gang. You have to make up your own mind if you want to accept the job or not, as for me, if it was a good job with good pay, I would jump on it. If you would like please check out my blog, lifeofagringoexpatinelsalvador.com El Salvador is a beautiful country with a lot to offer.Hope this helps you.

I live and work in El Salvador. Can you email me at karlaheld@hotmail.com and we can chat? I'm curious of the job you were offered in La Libertad. I can also explain more to you via email. Best, Karla

The CITY - no, TOWN - of La Libertad might not even have a movie or supermarket. The DEPARTMENT of La Libertad includes the western part of San Salvador & has EVERYTHING. After 32 years in San Salv, I ran away from the gangs & extortion. Walter Boyles

If you're talking about Puerto La Libertad you will be able to do everything you listed safely except for the cinima as there is none.
If you mean elsewhere in the department of La Libertad, it depends where as it runs from the beaches to Santa Tecla.

Dear Karla,
Would you mind if I PM you with similar questions regarding life in El Salvador? My husband and I accepted a job offer in one of the international schools in El Salvador. We would love to get as much information as possible from somebody who lives/lived there.
Thank you in advance! Iryna
