Anyone have any experience bringing used household goods from the States for personal use? I have an opportunity to bring items from my USA home (kayak, lawnmower, mattress, blower, weedeater etc) for free but I will be responsible for the tax. I am wondering if the taxes will negate the value of bringing the items in. Nothing would have a FMV of over 500.00 and the FMV of the total load would be 1,000 to 1,500 dollars. Thanks in advance for the help!

When I moved to El Salvador in 2010, I brought in a 40" Flat screen t.v., a Bose Wave Radio system, a video game system, and my dog. I paid a whopping $9.04 for bringing my dog in. However, the Customs agent helped me redo my form. I had listed everything as new. He changed it all to used. I also was moving there to get married and had my application for a fiance visa ready, so I'm not sure if that helped. But I brought the stuff in when I entered the country. Not sure if this is helpful to you, but I can tell you I was prepared to pay hundreds of dollars. I didn't even pay ten dollars.

I also moved here in 2010 with a bussette loaded with personal possessions including clothes, furniture mechanics tools, power hand tools, laptop computer, netbook computer, flat screen TV, iPhone. Spent 5 hrs at customs as had to unload everything to be inventoried.
No tax due, only thing was the bussette was more than 7 yrs old so I was only given a 60-day temporary permit before it had to leave the country, I knew this would be the case and was prepared to sell it in Guatemala but as it turned out churches are exempt from the bus age rule so traded it with a church for a car.
Didn't have a fiancee so that had nothing to do with it.
