I was born in El Salvador, Raised in California I have traveled all over Europe and Central America. moved here 8 years ago. I have realized that people are people no matter what color of skin. I have noticed the love that people from here, gives white people they are treated like gods also I have noticed the difference with blacks there is a lot of racist comments and hate. I wonder why ! Not everyone, but there is a lot of people like that .

From my travel experiences, El Salvador is no more racist than any other country in Central America. I am a black man who also traveled around the world. During my travels I managed to meet wonderful people from all racial and social backgrounds. I have experienced subtle and not so subtle forms of discrimination in the US and abroad.

I visited El Salvador three times between 2010 and 2014 and I felt there were great experiences. The interaction with the locals, street vendor, pupuseria, upscale restaurant was positive as I felt like I was being treated with respect and courtesy.

I remember everyone always saying “pase adelante, pase adelante”….that was nice!

Did a few people gave me the “stare”? Sure, but they do that in Europe too. Do they have racist people in El Salvador? Yes, but you can also find these types of people in almost every country in the planet. As was never harass or mistreated because of my very dark skin complexion.

My basic rule is treat others the way you want to be treated. It works most of the time.
I have been perusing these forums because I am planning another trip. This time I would like to stay at a waterfront resort/hotel.

Mr Bocaspbx You are right sir is like that everywhere. This little country has an ugly history you might not know about. back in the 40 s the was a wanna be hittler , He was the president martinez he slaughtered thousands of native Indians and ordered that blacks would not be allowed so unlike any other central american country we are the only ones without black communities or colonies. I am really glad you were treated with respect in my country. Allow me to suggest a great place to visit which is away from noise and you can relax and feel great its clean and the prices are reasonable this are the east side beaches of playa las flores you can google it . And we hope you enjoy your vacations next time you come here.

Well, that gives me a little heads-up about the fact that I found my major at university de Gerrardo Barrios (Mathematical Computational Physics) as to how I might be treated there as a brown, "mestiza" person in the maths/physics field. I'm looking at Latin America and the South Pacific to get AWAY from the way I get treated in the US and KKKanada about my being competent in Maths and Physics (I get "can you even DO Maths" way too often for someone who is the daughter of an Accountant!) - I'll keep looking.

El Salvador is a poor country. There should not be any racism there. How can the poor be racist?

There have not been many black people traveling in Central America, except for in the past decade or so. Also, there are some people in El Salvador who resent Americans, because they were deported from the US. I have encountered people who have behaved in a racist fashion towards me, and I have noted that their skin is typically much darker than my own, and their identity as a "Salvadoran" is pretty strong; but if you think about it, that is a political identity, and not an ethnicity; and, there is a reason why they do that. There are also a number of racist white tourists in El Salvador. They tend to have substance abuse issues, and general narcissism, which is a psychological disorder.

Part of the reason is historical. The Caribbean coast touches all the Central American countries except El Salvador. African slaves were off loaded in each of those countries. El Salvador did not reveive African slaves and there are very few blacks in the country. With no blacks to watch and experience, people tend to use cliche when talking about them. This is also true in the USA where no blacks live. People here look down upon Indians. That is a consequence of colonial times when Indians were slaves and colonos (landless peasants living on plantations). Status was conferred according to skin color,,white skin and blue eyes
were the most desirable.

Africans arrived on the scene long before Martinez did; if I were you and I were at all curious I would take a look at Latin American people receiving their DNA results, via Youtube. Plenty are surprised to discover that in addition to being 40% or more Indigena, they are 5% or greater African. Which would make them black, but neither mention to them that they are Indian or black, as they would take it to be offensive. Majority of population from Mexico through Central America is Mestizo, or mixed blood, European / Indian. The majority will also provide their national origin as if it were an ethnic origin in an adamant fashion. El Salvador is notorious for having deported her Jewish population to Nazi Germany, where some were reduced to slaves and others died in gas chambers.

It is disgusting to see some of the Latinos trying to suck up to white people and then trying to look down on black people, or sucking up to white people and then feeling very self conscious, ashamed, and angry when another minority sees them doing it. These tend to be the low class people with psychological issues going on, and the need to project their issues on to others; the same is true of the whites who are racists, there tends to be a lot of skeletons ready to fall out of their closet, and a mountain of debris swept under their rugs. Same is also true of all other individuals who behave in that fashion, they are dysfunctional to some degree or another, think alcoholism or drug addiction, or mental illness in their family of origin, or incest.
