I am moving to Santa Ana in Jan of 2017, I am on going to a Spanish school and learn to speak Spanish, then I want to stay in El Salvador and help with a ministry there. What do I need to do to move and stay in El Salvador without losing my US citizenship. Will a regular passport work to be able to stay? I read someone say about Guatemala if you leave the country every 3 months ( or pay some money to have your passport stamped) you don't need anything more than a passport. I wondered what is the legal requirements are and the best way to do it. I am on Social Security and will be living on that money, so will not be working for money, will be just volunteer work. Does anyone know about Humana Medicare, will it work in El Salvador? Thanks for any help you can give me or any place I can go to find the info.

Hola and welcome to beautiful El Salvador! The rules for staying here, without temporary or permanent residency are that when you enter the country they will issue you a 90 day visa that is good for the CA4 countries (ES,Guat,Honduras and Nica) at the end of the 90 days you must leave for three days and then you can come back for another 90 days. You cannot just go into the CA 4 countries so Belize, Panama, Mexico etc count as leaving) You can pay 25.00 and get an extension but it is a long and tedious process. There is a very detailed thread on this forum regarding residency if you are interested in that, or perhaps your ministry has more info on how you can navigate staying here longer. I would avoid having your passport illegally validated. Not a good idea. I do not believe your US insurance will work here but I would check with your issuer.
Enjoy your time in this lovely country

Hola, Thank you for the answer Giantmouse. I read where Medicare will not be any good in other countries. I have Humana Medicare, need to see what they say about other health insurance.
I will try to find the threads on residency in El Salvador. Thank you for answering so quick.

Technically you can only get 1 extension per year then you must leave for 72 hrs.
However if you're going to do volunteer work for a NGO or religious organization let them look after the paper work as they get the rules bent for their people that a normal person has no hope of getting.

Thank you busman for the reply. I am going to be doing mission work for a church in El Salvador to start with, then go where God sends me. I am wanting to take a Spanish course for a month or two. One I am looking at is a 4 month course, I have sent an email to the school asking them what I do about the 90 day limit. I have not heard back from them. I am thinking of going to the El Salvador embassy in Atlanta and talk to them, see what info I can get on what to do. Thanks again for the reply.

Just enter on a tourist visa to take your course then contact your school as the 90 days is ending as it's no big deal to get a 90 day extension and they can help with it or do whatever is needed for your volunteer term.
