Is there any advantage to dealing with a US bank that has branches in El Salvador? So far I can see Citibank and Scotia.

I saw three questions from you.
1. There are no US banks in ES. Only one bank. Banco ProAmerica will allow you to open an account if you are not a resident

2. All documents for residency use the apostille date. And yes. It is very difficult to coordinate them in the right time frame.

3. An NIT card is somewhat like a SS but you must have one to own property

#1 is correct, there are no US/Canadian banks in SV, Citibank has no affiliation with the US Citibank nor is Scotiabank affiliated with the Canadian one.

I have no experience with Banco ProAmerica but I previously had an account with https://www.bancoprocredit.com.sv all I needed was my Passport and an electric bill. Problem was they closed the branch in Puerto La Libertad and it was a PIA going either to Santa Tecla or Santa Elena to do my banking.

I just opened an account this morning at https://www.fedecredito.com.sv in Puerto La Libertad with my passport, Delsur bill, NIT card and my Salvadoran drivers license, so I know for a fact that it can be done there also.

NIT = tax number needed to make major purchases like car and property.
