" My husband and I wanted to go to Fiji on our honeymoon. Now that we CAN afford it, there''s civil unrest! Is it out of the question to go to any of the islands? "

" Things are very safe there now. I used to live there and still own a house in Fiji. I work now at a college in Michigan and am putting together a study tour for about 20 students in July. In the touristy areas, you especially don''t have anything to worry about. If I had any disclaimer to this, it is this: try to plan going before the August elections. If anything were to break apart politically, it would be during that time. Have a safe and happy trip! "

" Bula Mara, My husband and I honeymooned in Fiji in May, 2000. The coup happened the day before we left to return to Michigan. I felt like we were leaving ""home"" as we left the island. We have discussed the possibility of retiring to Fiji (although many years from now. HAHA) I would be interested in your thoughts about living in Fiji and also about the groups that you take there. Please e-mail me directly at kam5600@aol.com. We would appreciate your imput. Thanks Kim "

My wife and I visited Viti Levu in August 2001 and had a great time. Things were not quite as together as the guidebooks reported (after the coup confusion) but we always felt safe. (If you did not hear, the August election placed a native Fijian into office, so the Indian Fijians are going to continue to feel pressure.) We plan to visit for a 3 month period this September to do volunteer missions/education work. If anyone would like to discuss visiting or living in Fiji I would enjoy benefiting from the interaction. - Dennis

Hi Dennis I saw your letter and thought i would respond, hopefully you will get this. I was in Fiji for approximatelyy 6 weeks last October. My family and I left Las Vegas just two weeks after the 9/11 attacks. We are now considering moving there for good. But, we do not know whatis involved as far as citizenship and all the other political stuff. But we are very SERIOUS about moving there, and hope to find out alot of info from this site. Do you have any ideas, and please share your story.

Holly -
It's great to see someone respond to my post!
My wife and I have tickets purchased! We leave for close to a 4 month stay this August. We understand that for a visit any time under 4 months, we do not need work permits. We were also just told that visas must now be regularly renewed, monthly I believe.
I would be willing to send you email addresses and web sites about Fiji that I have collected, but prefer to send them to you personally rather than post them here.
I don't know the rules of this exchange, but am reluctant to give a lot of info here.
I am a public school teacher with the following address (for two more months anyway!)
dconrad@stan-co.k12.ca.us
I look forward to hearing from you. Or, if not, I can post short messages here.
- Dennis

Dennis, what do you know about Vanua Levu, Kadavu, Ono, and any islands other than Viti Levu and Ovalau? I'm thinking about moving to Fiji and from what I've seen of Viti Levu, I won't move there. Ovalau, I think has become too popular.
