My wife and I have visited Fiji several times and are curious about moving there from the US. I'll be researching things, but if you have a good direction to point me, please do. As well, if you have experience with this, please share. :)

Hi,
I lived in Fiji for five years. I have an article on www.escapeartist.com about living and working in Fiji. Look in magazine, back issues, vol. 1 issue 7 by Jacqueline D. Brown. Also, I just finished my book, The Other Side of Paradise (My Life in Fiji) seeking a publisher. I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Jacki

Long time back to this forum (previously listed just as "Mara"). I wanted to add to Jackie's comments about life in Fiji. Lived and worked (at the university) there six years, with husband and raising two kids. We go back every other year or so. Maintain strong connections to Fiji and try to keep our ear to the ground on new happenings relating to business and politics. Just returned July 2nd from the latest trip. Each time, I usually bring a group of college students and arrange for cultural programs and interaction with locals, something more meaningful than the usual tourist experience. Anybody interested in reading more, visit www.lookinglassdesign.com or you can get more info on the 2001 Fiji Study tour at www.FijiStudyTour.com which heavily documents the previous tour. Students always come away with a better sense of their place in the big world... Open to anyone's questions on or off forum. Direct email is: mara@lookinglassdesign.com

Dear Jacki:
I am a chiropractor planning to leave the US and move to Fiji. I have my passport and international driving permit. What practical steps can I take to get moved there, find property, and find employment ?

Let me know ehen your book is finished.

Aloha Steven..
I just moved to Fiji in October from Hawaii..
You can drive in Fiji with your US drivers license and other then that, you will only need a passport to be a visitor for 4 months.. If you want to work, you will have to apply for a work permit, which is becoming easier as they are putting a new system in place..

I did the whole move when I came here.. I shipped the dogs, a 40' container of household goods, a car, etc.. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask..

aloha for now
Gary

My wife and I will be moving to Fiji in 2 months. I have several questions:

1. We're looking to find a 3 bedroom house with an additional room for use as a study - any idea what kind of rent we should expect to pay for a place like that in Suva? Are houses like that even available? Do they sometimes permit pets (we have 2 cats, and we're not leaving them behind)? Or should I shift my expectations?

2. Is it permissible to ship our US spec cars to Fiji? Is it worth it? Or would we be better off purchasing cars locally?

3. What sort of quarantine requirements are there for pets?

4. Is broadband internet access readily available in homes? Or should I expect to use internet cafes?

Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. I'm finding it very difficult to find good information about Fiji on the internet.

Thanks,

Bill

Dear Bill,

I have not been to Fiji before but while surfing came across the following link which you may find useful and may reply most of your questions.

http://foia.state.gov/MMS/postrpt/print_pr_View_All.asp?cntryID=52§ion=&print=true&c_ID=&p_id=&s_ID=

If things go in my favour I myself alongwith my wife will be moving to Fiji in about two months time. See you then.

Love
Ami

hello,
i read all the reply's regarding moving to fiji,, i am in the same process and was hoping someone could help me by answering a couple of questions that i was stuck on, as you have probably gathered i am in the process of moving to fiji myself, my name is bianca and i am an australian citizen hoping to move to fiji by the end of this year or start of 2008, i have recently sent my resumes over to fiji just to local resorts and backpackers hostels, i am leaning at moving either to lautoka or nadi,, i do like lautoka just that little bit more tho!!
i am now in the process of looking at working visas and residental permits, im finding working visas a big problem, i can not find the correct information via the internet, i was hoping you could help me with this, does fiji allow holiday working visas? and if so would you have any idea how i obtain one? if not, how do i got about applying for a working visa? i went into the city last week to forign affaires and they told me i may have to fly into canberra to obtain a working visa?? if you have any knowledge or are able to help me in any way,, it would be muchly appreciated.
thank you for your time and consideration
Bianca.

Gary, I have a few questions that I thought you may be able to help me with. My husband and I want to move somewhere like Fiji for a year or two. We want to work while we are there, and we want to take our two dogs. Sounds like you have done both of these things. What was the process like taking your dogs with you? Did they have to be quarantined? Also, how did you go about finding a job there. Were the places you looked open to hiring someone from the U.S. That was there on a Visa?
Thank you for any informaiton you have to offer.

If you have any notion of brining a car with you, make sure you contact a company that has experience & knows what they're doing. I tried doing this on the cheap & what a mistake! Anyway, worth your time to put some research into this if you're considering. Here's the one I settled on https://www.a1autotransport.com/ship-car-to-fiji.php but your mileage may vary. I'd encourage anyone that finds themself in this situation to contact AT LEAST 5 companies before making a decision.
