Hi, hope someone can help me. We're south africans with 2 kids. A company contacted my husband today with a job offer for fiji. This was never really in our scope and so I know nothing about fiji and the info on the net is all tourist-related.
I would like to know what you would think a family should earn per month/year? Is there any expat schools in fiji? Please, anything and everything will be appreciated. We lived in saudi arabia for 2 years and loved it, a but have got no idea what to expect from living in fiji.
Thanks pearl

I'm not sure about schools, but you may love Fiji. It is one of the most majical places I have ever seen. The cities of Suva and Nadi are somewhat shady, but the countryside and people are amazing. The country is simplistic, but clean and mostly safe. My cell phone functioned better on a remote Fijian island than it did in California. You may lease property, but only native Fijians are allowed to own property. Fijians are usually honest and sociable. Often strangers will smile and wave to you. The islands are full of rain forests, prehistoric rivers, mohagany forests, and coral reefs. You must respect their culture and tribal laws. They are often extremely Christian. You may want to avoid the conversation topic of religion if you're not into being Christian.
I wish I could offer more practical information. I do know that groceries are ridiculously cheap compared to U.S. and Europe. Fiji is English friendly, and offers many amenities found in the British Commenwealth. I hope you have a wonderful stay there with your family. You may never want to leave.

I'm giving serious thought to a permanent relocation to Fiji and wondering how difficult it is to find work there. Myself and possibly (hopefully!) a couple friends are hoping to establish a small intention community where we can buy or lease land, grow our food and live quietly with little inpact and in peace. Would be very grateful for any insight as to how you like your life there.
Thanks

Hi there,
I would like to know how safe it is on the Fiji islands. We are from South Africa and have a small child and we don't want to have the same situation there like here in RSA. Any comment is highly appriciated.

Hello Pearl I'm an Australian who also has a home in Fiji but not in the Suva/Nadi areas which are the main areas for work unless tourist related.
Unless you are sponsored in Fiji you cannot work so your husband can expect to negotiate his salary and conditions. I can't give you much information unless I know where you are to be sent.
There are international schools in both Suva and Nadi. I do not like Nadi and wouldn't live there but Suva is a beautiful city although very wet. Cost of fruit & veg is low, but accommodation should be included in your package.
I live on an outer island which is beautiful, but I have never been able to work - I would be deported if I tried to work without a permit.
Let me know where you are to go and maybe I can tell you more. I have been going to Fiji for 30 years, off and on.

Hi - I'm an Australian and have a house in Fiji. I have been going to and from for 30 years but can't work - work permits are hard to get and you need to be sponsored by a business already established in Fiji.
If you want to start an intentional community with a few people you should keep in mind that you are only allowed visas for 4 months at a time. If you are really interested still I have some land available I can sell to you quite cheaply. It is freehold land, and there is only 8% freehold availble in Fiji. I have held it for many years.
Good luck.

Your message regarding owning land is incorrect. 8% of land is freehold and I have had land for 30 years in Taveuni.
It is available and I can sell it any time as it is Torrens Title (just as in Australia.)
I agree with you it is a very beautiful place - especially Taveuni.

Hi Pearl, Just wondering if you got any info that you needed about Fiji Schools. I lived in a village just out of Sigatoka in 2005 with my 2 children for 6 months. My boys took over their school work via correspondence from Australia but after a week of arriving they met all the kids in the village and ended up at Fiji School. Mix of Fijians and Indo-Fijians, very strict (still have the cane) but very educational, very old fashioned schooling as in no speaking out of turn, no talking in class, no doodling on books etc. I have lots more info if you need it, let me know. Cheers Lynda

Bula Pearl, Suva has a well established International School (All ages catered for)and is also the location of the University of the South Pacific - my kids went through International and enjoyed the experience. Actually just to correct the other reply - you can own land in Fiji although it must be freehold and not linked to native Lease. An excellent range of expat housing is available and domestic help is cheap. As for the earning you can live very cheaply in Fiji - have a look on Harcourts or Jokhan Real Estate web sites for an idea of house rentals. I am sure your Fijian experience will be positive.

Hello Alps,
We are a couple living in Boston, Ma seeking to move to Polynesian islands with the same intention as you. We were wondering if you are open for dialogue about this venture soon.

Sorry to shatter your dream, but the country is turning into a corrupt and crime ridden place. And due to harse censorship currently in place due to the military coup, one doesn't hear about it. It is therefore not a viable option to bring a family or partner to, let alone yourself.
