And if so would you have any idea how i obtain one? If not, how do i go about applying for a working visa? i went into the city last week to foreign affaires and they told me i may have to fly into Canberra to obtain a working visa?? if you have any knowledge or are able to help me in any way,, it would be muchly appreciated. Bianca,
Hello.I got your email from ExpatExchange. I read your posting about trying to find information concerning work visas in Fiji. Were you able to find anything out? I have sent several messages to people through Expat and have not received any responses. I am moving to Fiji in September of 2009. I am hoping to meet with the Fijian Embassy this summer to discuss the possibility of getting my work visa in order. If you are now living and working in Fiji, I would appreciate any information you could give me. I am hoping to work in the hospitality industry, hotel or restaurant, when I get there. I am a little scared that I will have a horrible time finding work and/or getting my visa.

Seems like a lot of folks are looking to do this. I urge you to make sure you're up to date on current events there. Since a coup in Dec 2006, the country has been run by a Military-led interim government. Expatriates are coming under more scrutiny as several have been forcefully removed from the country. The economy is starting to tank due to the stresses from reductions in tourists dollars.
As for getting a work permit, that almost always requires employment arranged in advance with the employer putting up a bond. If you have qualifications, check out some NGOs or even the University of the South Pacific. But I wouldn't go with much hope to get a work permit after moving there... unless you have friends there you can work for under the table.

As an Australian who has worked in Fiji as an expat in 2007, I'd have to agree 100% with Mara1's comments. In the meantimne, you may wish to checkout http://classifieds.fijitimes.com/ ans view the 'situations vacant' section of the country's most widely read daily paper.

hi bianca, you cant come to fiji to work at backpackers etc. the evrage wage is around $60-120 per week for a local so they have no need to allow short term working visas for uni studendts or adults. You need to apply for a professional job that a local cannot fill. Hope this helps. danielle

Sorry to shatter your dream, but the country is turning into a corrupt and crime ridden place. And due to harse censorship currently in place due to the military coup, one doesn't hear about it. It is therefore not a viable option to bring a family or partner to, let alone yourself.

Hi all, Unfortunately I have to agree with SimonKoala. If you're trying to run to Paradise to get away from problems in your own home country, you'll only land deeper into the pot of trouble. Fiji's government has gone haywire, being run by a corrupt regime that overthrew the last elected government in December 2006. They have been put on notice by the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum. The media has been virtually shut down and now only reports "good" news approved by government censors. The money has devalued further by 20% and major industries are in meltdown.
Want anything like a work or residence permit or to buy a piece of property (of which there was only about 12% that was "freehold" anyway) or how about "importing" your personal effects, you're likely to get a major banana republic-style run-around.
Short and simple - not a good place for an expat to move to right now.
