Retiring to Fiji

Hi.
I am a 60 year old female contemplating retiring to Fiji. I have a house to sell and "Super" so fit the immigration requirements (as far as I have been able to find out what they are).
I am seeking advice/contact with Aussie ex-pats who have already made a similar move.

Hi Sandy,
I lived in a village in Fiji in 2005 and upon entry to Fiji we could stay three months then had to go to the Immigration Office in Suva to renew for another three months. The Immigration Office was a nightmare of forms, people behind counter unsure and even had to get a letter from the Chief of the Village to say he welcomed us for another three months. Everyone tells you something different, I know this is not much help with your plans to retire and hopefully you will hear from someone who has actually done it. I loved Fiji and hope to also retire there one day - I miss all the village kids so much. Good Luck with your search - Lynda

Sorry to shatter your dream, but the country is turning into a corrupt and crime ridden place. And due to harse censorship currently in place due to the military coup, one doesn't hear about it. It is therefore not a viable option to bring a family or partner to, let alone yourself.

Pitty the views expressed here are not backed up by some statistics or even fact. It would be a shame to act on this rhetoric which seems more political than practical. Recent devaluation of the FJD and a growiing understanding that the retirement(Just like the tourism industry) industry are important sources of overseas funds mean that retirement in Fiji remains a viable option. A number of high standard developments are available and this would be a good time to buy in. This is not to say that various levels of red tape still exist and a number of sensible life style decisions still need to be carefully considered. It is true that property and domestic crime are an issue however the vaste majority of expats are generally not exposed to these problems. The area you decide to retire in and the type of property you buy/rent will no doubt drive various security options. What is probably of more concern to you is your health or perhaps your anticipated period of non reliance on higher level medical support or treatment. Clearly some parts of Fiji are better served than others - best you ask around when you are identifying locations. Suggest you take an experimental holiday in one of the many holiday locations and make your decision based on this. Good luck with your efforts.

Hello. Has anybody recently retired to Fiji? I'm planning on doing it and buying a house there (although I'm a young female retiree, only 50). Been there many times on holidays. Don't seem to locate the expat community there. Can anyone help. Thanks. Oriana

Hi there, my name is Lynda and I just saw your message about retiring to Fiji, I have holidayed in Fiji for many many years and finally took "time out" at the age of 45 to go and live in a village in Fiji for 6 months. It was a huge step to pack up my house and children but it was the best decision I have ever made. I lived up the Sigatoka Valley in a village called Narata in a kit home on 2 acres beside the river, met all the locals, learnt the language, learnt customs and traditions (read up before you go), Only certain places you can buy freehold properties but can lease. Private message me to discuss more but I will always return to Fiji and also plan to retire there. Regards Lynda
