For many newcomers and those considering living in Fiji, access to quality medical care is a top priority. Please help those moving to your area by posting your experiences with the local health care system. Also, include any information about health insurance in Fiji. Be sure to post the name of your city, region or town.

I had food poision from a restaurant this week. I was able to walk in the doctor's office without an appointment and see him in 30 minutes for a $30 fee. his office is next to a pharmacy or chemist as they call it. He was knowledgable, kind and professional. I am feeling better.

I am a US citizen and plan to retire to Fiji. One of the requirements for Fiji residency is health insurance. The US Medicare system is not provided for provided overseas. What health insurance is recommended for expats living in Fiji? Thank you for any information on this subject. Glenn lake800@embarqmail.com

There must be some form of private health insurance available. I travel and stay in Levuka for periods of up to six weeks and now always obtain health insurance. There is a good Australian private doctor in Suva.

Try one of these:
BSP Health Insurance http://www.bsplife.com.fj/
AON Insurance http://www.aon.com/fiji/
Both have plans suitable for expats. There are options including travel to overseas facilities in cases were treatment is not available in Fiji

I live in Tavua. 18 months ago I had pancreatitis, had to charter a plane to get to Nadi and found "the expat" doctor on Nadi Back rd. HE told me to get on a plane and not go near a hospital in Fiji even the private hospital in Suva he said was not great. Spent 4 weeks in hospital in NZ. WOuld have died if I had stayed in Fiji. Your "insurance" needs to be a plane ticket to NZ or OZ in my opinion.

i would not advise getting insurance in Fiji, read the fine print, sometimes the insurance dosent get lodged, hello legal system, get on a plane. i broke my leg here, the doctors were really good, the nurses buzy on their phones chatting. Drs advice was to go to nz, best advice. any doubts go and visit Lautoka/Nadi hospital, im not a snob but if you are sick i want to be somewhere clean.
