Retiring to Fiji

I would love feedback on good areas of Fiji to retire to from Oregon USA in a year or so. Love local customs/traditions/folk arts but would love to have expats around too to help settle in. Doing this on a tight budget (will be renting not buying) so want to stay away from pricey tourist areas. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

We love Pac Harbour and there are many expats as well as locals. We have a small shopping area right here so very handy for small grocery items instead of always going to Suva which is about 45 minutes away.We have met lots of people and have found our way around with where to shop and who to call for plumbing, electrical, etc so the people here at Pac Harbour have been great. We purchased our house but there are homes for long term rent as well.

Hello Kym
I'm an Australian woman (retired) who has been going to Fiji for the last 30 years and planned to retire there but family reasons have put that on hold. I have a house on the island of Taveuni, which is the 3rd largest island in the Fiji Group and is known as the Garden Island. If you are looking for somewhere cheap to rent you may think about it. Also on the other big island Vanua Levu is Savu Savu where you might find cheaper rental than Viti Levu which is very touristy and quite expensive. If you only have Social Security to live on you would find it difficult I think. I can tell you a lot more but would prefer it on private email so if you would like to communicate my address is christinecoghill5@gmail.com. Kind regards

Hi, I am moving for a job at USP in Suva in January. I have never been to Fiji. I am a PhD and have been at unt.edu for the past 7 years as adjunct but laid off and decided to go international. I was told I would be in faculty housing for 4 months but then need a place of my own. I think I want to rent furnished one bedroom. I don't think I'll get a car. I'm on a 3 yr contract and my work visa is being processed now, that should go fine. I was raised in Chicago, currently in Texas, traveled the world at every opportunity but never been to Fiji. I have been to Australia and New Zealand. So, I hope to meet other Americans, where are they? and is there anything I should bring that I can't get there? Any, absolutely any help is appreciated! Maureen Murphy PhD at UNT

Also, how far is Pac from USP in Suva? is there public transit? Should I bring my bicycle? I'm on a 3 year work contract as PhD, teaching in business. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks, Maureen Murphy PhD
