I would like to hear from people who have recently moved to Fiji....say in the past 6-12 months......about the cost of moving there.
We are thinking that we will need a 20foot container for household goods and then have two dogs to take with us as well.
We are relocating from Melbourne, Australia.
Would appreciate approximate costs, just putting the "feelers" out there!
Thanks in advance.

Hi vrj1
Would love to hear about your experience! You can send me a personal message, or if you wish to email me at aly5860@hotmail.com we can take it from there.
What part of Melbourne did you move from and where have you moved to?
Is it a permanent move, for work or to retire?
How long beforehand did you have to get "the wheels in motion" so to speak?
These are just a few of the questions I have! Hope to hear from you soon!

Wow! That's super cheap. I paid $5700 for only 9 cubic metres by sea from Melbourne-Nadi. They did all the packing however but I was told that was necessary for customs. I may have been taken for a ride!

Hi I moved 9 cubic metres of household goods from Melbourne to Nadi late last year & it was very expensive. I had 9 cubic metres via sea & it cost $5690. They did all the packing but I was told that was necessary due to customs. I used Crown Removalists who were good other than the expense.

That does seem expensive....! Maybe as you were not moving a full container? According to a website that I just looked at, a 20ft container is 33 cubic metres.
Would love to hear about your experience and why you chose Nadi to relocate to?
Cheers :)

Sounds awesome! Is it a permanent posting or are you returning to Australia at some point?
We intend to settle in Savusavu.
Love it there, love Fiji in general!

Would love to hear from anyone who has brought a dog into Fiji. How long is the quarantine and how they treat your pet.

We haven't moved there yet , but we are taking 2 small dogs. Quarantine is 7 days if you are coming from Australia or New Zealand. 30 days if you are coming from the U.S. or other places. There are lots of hoops to jump through, so do your research!

Hello Kezinfiji We are moving to Fiji for a lifestyle change and also to earn an income. Tired of the rat race that Melbourne has become....sick and tired of successive governments screwing us into the ground with their taxes. Sick of politicians lies and watching them selling out our once beautiful country.
We have been to Fiji a few times, driven ourselves around both islands and done lots of exploring. We stayed for a month last time and in Savusavu for 2 weeks.
We loved buying fresh local produce and fish from the market and meeting the locals.....it's a beautiful place and the Fijians are happy people.
We also married in Fiji in 2012 on the Coral Coast and our best man was a Fijian, whom we still keep in touch with!
Will miss my kids and grandkids, but they know that they can come over anytime for a cheap holiday!
How do you find the cost of living there? Everything l read and from personal experience it is about 40% cheaper overall than Australia.
Cheers!

Thanks, Aly! Where did you do your research? And have you heard how they treat them? Are you able visit? We would be coming from the US, so that's a long time for our little guy to be without us. Thanks!

Hi smealing. Did all my research online....google Bio security Fiji.
You will also need to know the US regulations for exporting.
I have heard nothing about how animals are treated on arrival, but have found someone l think l can trust, to look after them until we get there.
It's going to be cheaper to fly ourselves there, than the two dogs!! So that cancels out my idea of taking some kangaroos with us, for company! Lol ??
Also Google pet transport companies over there. Only problem is they know how to charge! One quote we had for a door to door service was almost $9000 AUD.
cheers

I wouldn't say its 40% cheaper. Some things are cheaper but some things are more expensive. Anything locally produced is about 40% cheaper but all western food like cereals, biscuits, canned goods which are imported are the same or more expensive than Australia. Some things like tinned tomatoes would be the same as Oz. I bought a tin of carnation milk today which cost me $4.45 aussie. Imported veg like broccoli, beans & mushrooms are currently $13/kg oz. Petrol is $1.20/lt here at the moment, i heard it under $1 in Australia recently. Restaurants are about the same, maybe a little cheaper (depends where you go). Alcohol is dearer. Make sure you bring all your electrical appliances with you, they are ridiculous prices here. Same for linen, very little choice and expensive. At least in Nadi, perhaps more choice in Suva. Chocolate is expensive :)

Hi Kez
Thanks, that's interesting and good to know. Yeah we thought the supermarket in Savusavu was expensive for anything imported......I guess it is best to buy local wherever possible, just means changing your shopping habits somewhat! Yes, petrol is $1/l here at the moment! We intend to bring all electrical/power goods with us, even if we won't need them initially, cos we noticed that they were exy there. We found that Crown Lager was cheaper to buy in Fiji than here....we did drink mostly local though, enjoying Fiji Gold and Vonu Lager :). Pity about chocolate! Will have to find another vice.....lol :)

Hi Kez I had a quote from Jetpets for around $9800 for two dogs, door to door service plus all vet checks and vaccinations.
I refuse to pay that much, so started doing some research on doing it myself and got it down to about $3000. I have bought the airline approved crates for them both, secondhand on eBay for about $180.
Look up Qantas Freight and download the information from there, plus any forms you need to fill out.
I thought you were staying in Nadi and living the dream there?
Are you coming back to Australia?

Hi Kez....no worries Don't forget that there will be a lengthy stay in quarantine in Australia, also....I believe that it is 30days.
Our plans are suddenly rocketing along! We thought we were going to be stuck here till at least the end of this year, but as luck would have it, we have found 2 properties close to Savusavu for sale. We have been in contact with the owners and all in agreement on a final price, so the Sales Contract is being drawn up, as we speak!
So hubby and I are heading over in a couple of weeks, once we get his passport and can get some flights booked. This will be just a 7 day quickie trip to pay the deposit and try to organise as much as possible about residency, bank accounts, PO Box, etc, etc,
Our puppies will be in good hands as my son and his partner will be staying at our place and babysitting them for us....lol ;)
So we just need to finish our ensuite/WIR build and get our house on the market, so we can finally move over for good!
What's news at your end? How did you fare with the cyclones?
Our friend and best man Api lives in Sigatoka and although they didn't lose their home this time, they were inundated as their village is in a low lying area near the river.....not good.
So many crops were wiped out that food was in short supply.
We hope to help him raise his house off the ground and assist him in any way possible, when we move over.
Take care, Aly :)
