" Hi, I am moving to Paris in 2 months. If I decide to stay how do I go about the residency papers-or can I just use my US passport. In other words what do I need to do so that I won''t get in trouble with French authorities. I would appreciate very much any suggestion... "

" Nilsa De Vengoechea - 09:45am Feb 2, 2001 Getting residency in France is not just a question of saying..""here I am and I want to be a resident"". There are all kinds of forms to get what is called a ""carte de longue sejour"" things such as do you have a job? what will you live on?are the main concerns. It is difficult for a US citizen to get one if the answer to the above is..I intend to look for a job! if you are sent as an expat with a US firm and you want to stay that is another problem in itself. without knowing the apecifics it is hard to know. Since as a resident you are entitled to all kinds of benefits they want to know that you are a solid citizen with a bank account to support yourself and a family! Let me know Nilsa De Vengoecgea nilsadv@bellsouth.net "

" HI Lee, If you intend to stay more than 3 months you will first need to get a visa from your nearest consulate BEFORE you leave. As Nilsa also said, it''s hard to know what to tell you since we don''t know your exact situation. Alot of people choose to just leave the country every 3 months, hanging on to all travel tickets since most places in Europe won''t stamp your passport. To be honest, after I was done with school I well overstayed my visa and never had a problem. However if you ever want to be an official resident, it''s hard to change your status without returning home for the visa. Also, if you plan on getting an apartment lease you will have to have a bank account and proof of income, etc. As far as all that is concerned, I would recommend signing up for a non-resident bank account when you arrive - you can do that at Banque Transatlantique or Societe Generale. " Hi Diana, I thank you very much for responding to my post and for the information you gave. I found it all very helpfull. As I mentioned also to Nilsa, through her personal e-mail, I am self-employed and have enough means to support myself without getting a job in France. My only problem was the Carte de Sejour dilema, but now that you have given me a clear picture I guess I will have to pospond my departure until I hear from the French Consulate. Diana if it is not too much to ask I would like to know the monthly fees Internet Service Providers charge in France and if DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines)is available and if so how much it costs. I would really appreciate it. Once again thank you. Lee "

" Hi Lee, Our internet provider is about 90 francs/month. We get 20 hours of internet time, but only evenings and weekends. It''s fine for us because we have Outlook Express. I do know for a fact that you can get a DSL line through France Telecom. However I have absolutely no idea how much it costs. You might want to see if there is information on their website. I do know France Telecom has an English speaking customer service line. THere are many forms of internet service otherwise. Lots of people use cable now as well. As for the carte de sejour, I would check with the nearest consulate as to what you need for the visa. I know they will ask for proof of resources and health insurance. Once you are hear you will have to apply at the prefecture de police for the official card. It will take some time, but don''t worry. We all go through it. You will have to go through a physical (nothing too horrible) and open up a bank account, etc. Definitely go take care of the bank as soon as you arrive. Most places won''t give you an account unless you have a lease, but you can''t get a lease without the account. Vive La France! Like I said earlier, just apply for a non-resident account in one of the banks I mentioned above. They will give you all you need to get a lease. Diana "

" My husband is just looking into ASDL service and has found it to be about $40 per month. That''s about what we pay for the phone service to run our wanadoo account with our usage level. There are also free services out there too--in fact one of them is called free.fr if you want to check that out. It''s the line charge that adds up because even with unlimited internet service (our Wanadoo unlimited runs about $11 per month I think) you have to remember that there is no such thing as free local calls. An additional expense to ASDL service is the installation of a second phone line. We''re thinking of doing it so that''s why I''m a little more informed. We don''t have cable down here in the boonies... 35 minutes outside Paris counts as the boonies here! Oh, and by the way, money has been easy to think in this year because the Euro is about a dollar and everything is required to be labeled in both dollars and francs. Lori "
