Hi everyone. Im moving from Alameda in California which is near Oakland and San Francisco to Paris in August. What moving companies did you use and what was your experience with that company? Would you recommend them and if you could tell me about what it cost to just ship some personal items and art that would be so great. Thanks for your help.

I love Paris and that is why I am moving there. August is just a good time for me.

I used Crown Relocation when I moved from France to NYC. https://www.crownrelo.com/en-us
Really professional. All our staffs were packed by one crew of 3 person. Their cartons are good quality. They labelled the cartons with different colors labels for each rooms, the name of person... When we moved back, we used another moving company, they were 5, less efficient, less professional and packed more securely so there are things broken.

I used Alliance international and do not recommend them. They hired an outside company to pack our things. The shippers broke some stuff which is normal in such a move, but they also somehow managed to lose stuff as well. This included 1/3 of a bed frame. How does that happen?! All in all, they lost about $3000 worth of items, and when when we told Alliance and asked for the money the lost and broken items were insured for they argued that they can't prove anything was lost. It's been a year and we finally settled at 2/3 of the price insured for. I would have kept fighting but we really need the money to buy a new bed frame! The company they hired to pack also made a complete mess of our house and backed their truck into the neighbor's fence and never told anyone. We found out via a very angry neighbor a day later.

I have done it the other direction, not this one. Look into shipping not moving. You end up taking a crate to the port of Oakland and having it shipped to a port in Europe and then getting it delivered by a trucking co. It cost much, much less. 1 square meter cost about 150 euros a couple of years ago.

Do you have the name of a shipping company you would recommend? I am moving from Houston to Sète this year. Kathleen

Funny we moved from Alameda to Paris 12 years ago. At the time, we used Schumacher in So SF http://www.schumachercargo.com/moving/moving-from-san-francisco.html They offered the best deal. We bought 30 big boxes from Walgreens and loaded them onto a pallet with shrink wrap. A month or two later we have everything delivered to our door in the Yvelines. There was no breakage and it was pretty painless except for the customs . You must prove in French that you are moving definitively from the USA that you do not currently live in France for all your personal belongings . We did and we paid no taxes
A year or so later we had our car shipped over. It was a bad idea because the car needed to be re-fitted to meet the requirements of the French DMV. If you are interested in doing this you have a compliant car you can fill it to the rafters with your stuff for no extra charge

Wow. Follow alamedan. Thank you for the recommendation. How did you prove you were moving indefinitely to not pay taxes? I am moving indefinitely. Does the moving company help with that?

That's so great! Cost of living in sf right now is so high I bet Paris is cheaper even with the exchange rate.

It depends on how you want to move.
I moved to Paris last September from Los Angeles, and spent quite some time finding moving companies.
The cheapest option (which is what I did), especially if you have minimal furniture, is to pack boxes yourself onto a pallete and use upackweship.com; they were very friendly and communicative, picked up the pallete on my curbside, and i paid 1/4 of what others quoted. they also suggested it would take 10 - 12 weeks for my shipmen to arrive, but it arrived on my doorstep in paris within 6 weeks! they also were very well-informed about the best way to fill out customs forms, and i had absolutely no problem (they didn't even open my pallete or my boxes--i had 30+ boxes).
if you are moving furniture, etc., you're probably better off finding someone that will do full room moving, or someone that will allow you to get a crate / container at home that you can pack at your leisure and they merely pick up, transport to port, and ship over.

I am visiting (from Tampa, FL) Paris this summer to determine if I should move there or the Dubai. My main concern is finding work. I don't speak the language but willing to learn. Any advise on finding work.

My understanding is that you will not be given a resident or work visa unless you have already been hired for a job. This is difficult to get because the French government requires that employers prove that they cannot find any french citizens to fill the job. The unemployment rates are quite high, making that an unlikely scenario.

Yep, the challenge for us non-Europeans is getting a work permit. I got lucky because my US company transferred me to Paris and took care of the work visa. We recently did a survey of English-speakers working in France and found the results pretty interesting. https://www.renestance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/WORKINGFRANCE_LINKS.pdf Looks like most of them started their own business, which you have the right to do as a non-EU citizen. There is a special visa to start a business, but apparently the French Consulate are very rigorous and don't hand them out too easily... better to come over on a Long-Stay Tourist visa, do the groundwork for your business, and then apply for the Business visa upon renewal. In any case, best of luck!

I am thinking of retiring in Fance (Brittany or in Normandy) by the end of this year. I have a lot to learn about the process but thanks for your post on the shipping.

We used Schumacher Logistics for our move from LA to Paris for an entire household and found their rates very reasonable (we have a hightop 40 ft container and the fee was $10k). They are reliable, respectful and efficient.

It's actually cheaper to bring a few boxes with you and pay the $25 each for extra baggage. You might get more response on Facenbook: Americans in France (closed group)
