How hard is it for an American to get a checking account in France? I hear it is impossible…

We just opened an account two weeks ago. We had originally met and interviewed with them in June 2014. But that house deal fell through. We went back to the same bank in November 2015 while searching for a home again. This time we had more of the required documents and she still had our file from 2014. We were still short two docs so we emailed those upon our return home in December. They will want to know why you are opening an account and you will have to fill out an IRS form or two. So, no it's not impossible. This home will be a second home only. And that was acceptable (and common) to the bank. By the way, it was Banque Populaire Occitane. Very nice folks. They're also providing our home insurance. Best to you,

Maybe we were just lucky but we walked into a BNP Paribas branch in San Francisco, CA, USA and opened an account. We told them what branch we wanted to use in France and the account was waiting for us when we got there. (It was Aug when we arrived and they had trouble finding it but it all worked out) Bottom line, I would look for a bank with a US office near you. John
