We are a couple (2) who are considering retiring to either France or Italy. We prefer to be just outside a City like Paris. What areas should we look at?

I think you'd get more responses if you provided more information. France & Italy are very different. What about France makes you want to live there?
How much money do you have for rent?
Do you know what it takes to get a long-term visa?
What do you like to do?
Do you speak French?
Are you coming from an EU-country? That is very different than moving from the States.
