House-sitting

I'm just beginning my investigation into the best way to determine where in Europe to eventually permanently relocate. I had the thought that house-sitting may be a way of tasting bits of each region. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is appreciated.

I don't have personal experience with house sitting, yet, but I have done some research. Also, I have friends who have done house sitting all over Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

There are a number of house sitting agencies online. Just google house sitting agencies, and go through the ones that have opportunities in the area you are interested in.

For example there is a great agency called "House Sit Mexico" that just operates in Mexico. Others just operate in Europe, or just the Caribbean. One or two reputable ones have listings all around the world.

They each have different screening requirements, different membership fees, etc. You may decide to register with 2 or 3 different ones. Good Luck!

The honeymoon period can last up to 2 years in my experience. So house sitting is not likely to let you stay long enough to get past the rose coloured glasses.

Really, the only way to know if you will 'stick' somewhere is to live there and see. It isn't hard to tell if a place interests you in general if you visit for a short period but what it can tell you is limited.

The other issue I would see is the question of how many places and over what period of time, your investigation will take place.

If it were me, I'd just pack a bag and go to A; rent a furnished studio apartment and try living there. If you decide after a period of time that you want to move on, then move on. If you never get around to moving on, then don't move on.

It is not a decisiion that must be made beforehand you know. Try reading here:

Old Pro, I agree with a lot of what you say, but for those who aren't rollin' in the dough, they can have extended travels without paying for accommodations everywhere. House sitting provides a way that someone can travel to various locales and have free accommodation, thus saving the cash for more travel. Most international house sits are from 1-6 months. There are many that are for longer periods. That will give anyone who is the least bit intuitive enough time to discern if that particular locale should be stricken off the list, or if it might warrant a longer stay.
