" I am actually from Berlin -- it''s a lovely city! It depends on what you guys like. But I would say the nicest areas are in the district of Charlottenburg (around the Savignyplatz especially, but also in the West End). Then, there''s Schoeneberg, which has some beautiful places too. Let me know if you have any specific question, and I''d be more than happy to tell you all you want to know. (you can email me at danie-@iagora.com) P.S. I also lived in DC for 3 years... Daniel "

" Re: Berlin Well, that depends very much on your propensity to spend on rent. The best ares are Zehlendorf and Dahlem, followed by Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf in the former West. In the East then Mitte (Spandauer Vorstadt) and Prenzlauer Berg are very urban and lively or Pankow for the east equivalent (but much cheaper) of Zehlendorf. Best to be in contact with a firm of property consultants to advise you. If you need help email me at 101.17785-@germanynet.de. Good luck! "

" I am entertaining a job offer that would have me working near the town of Briesen. Briesen is southeast of Berlin, in the former east, on the Number 13 Highway (off of the Berlin ring). We have a daughter that we would like to send to one of the international schools in Beerlin proper. Do you have suggestions of what would be a nice family area to consider? What would the average rental rates be for a one family house or apartment? Are houses typically avilablel for rental? What size apartment would be available/typical of a german family witha four and one year old? What are the average monthly utility bills? What are typical utility bills that are paid? Also, can you speak a little about the Berlin cost of living compared to Philadlephia/DC? "

" Hi Candice: I, too, am moving from NE Florida to Berlin later this year (pending a successful acquisition...) and have the same questions as you regarding places to live. I can only share with you what I have learned so far with one visit to Berlin earlier in the summer. (As such, you may want to validate this info on your own before committing yourself...) My understanding is that most English speaking expats locate in the South West quadrant of Berlin. (This happens to be where the US and English Military were / are stationed.) Some of the ""town"" names to look for are Zehlendorf, Steglitz, Wilmersdorf and possibly even Charlottenburg. Within each of these areas, of course, there is a rather wide range of ""interest, affordability and safety"" relative to your own needs which you will need to do your ""Due Dilligence"" on, but, at least this will get you started in the right area. As far as language classes, I, too, am looking for a ""quick"" way to a functional proficiency with the German language. Berlitz has a ""Total Immersion"" program... 7.5 hours/day, 5 days/week, from 2 to 6 weeks depending on your starting point and your learning ability. The tough part to swallow is it''s cost... $520 PER DAY! But, if you can get your company to foot the bill, it''s probably the way to go. That''s all the help I can give as of right now. If you get any other responses that have additional insight and information, I would really appreciate it if you would forward them to me. Thanks. (Ooops! I should say - Danke!) Good Luck to you. Bill "

" Hello Candice and Bill - I currently live in Berlin (also moved from NC) and think the previous places mentioned on this posting site are great places to live. If you are looking for quiet and nature and a small suburb feel, Zehlendorf works well (I teach at the JFK school in Zehlendorf, which is bilingual.). It is also a district where many people (especially kids) know English. But you still need to learn German, I think, to be comfortable. I live in Charlottenburg (which is nearer the middle of the city) and LOVE IT! I moved from Zehlendorf to here because I wanted to be closer to the city center. I live near Savignyplatz and am surrounded by cafes, boutiques, restuarants, bars, etc. As for learning the language, The Goethe Institute offers intensive classes (probably just as pricey as the one Bill mentioned), but there is also a school called (I think) the Hard Knocks Schule - that is probably cheaper because it doesn''t have a ""brand name"" associated with it. I would love to help in any way I can. Email if you have other questions. Wilkommen! Amy "

" Hello Amy, Thanks for your response. I have not looked at this site since I moved here a month ago, due the hectic nature of the whole thing. I did end up moving to Wilmersdorf, but it took me forever and I had to use an agency- which I now need to pay. ouch. I am very happy with my new Wohnung and think it will be sehr gemuetlich in the long run. Anyhow, I am here recruiting teachers for an exchange program in the US, so although I am not directly teaching, I am in the general area. Where did you move from in NC? Email me if you would like to get together with a fellow person from NC. Tschuss-Candice "

" Hello, I will be moving to Berlin in March of next year, however I spent the summer in Berlin beginning to learn the language. My work did not or will not pay for language school but I found an inexpensive one: Hartnack Schule. This school is more grammer based and its courses are really designed for ""proper"" and fast german language learning at a really affordable price. "
