" I will become a Frankfurter in two months and am starting to research the city. What are good places to live? I have heard that Sachsenhausen is a bit more laid-back and interesting, but there are many areas of the city. Anyone have wesites or first-hand info on neighborhoods or even apartment listings that I can check from the US? -/Cory "

" Cory, We moved tothe Frankfurt area about two months ago. Had a look at apartment prices inthe City and rented a twelve room house 24 Km away for half what a 3 room apartment, in a not particularly good position, would have have cost. Getting into the city is no problem, direct train service from five minutes walk away or drive in (cruise at 110 MPH on the Autobahn!) in about 40 minutes. Our house is inthe Hochtaunus hills, a very beautiful area. If you like, I can get you the names of realtors in the area. One word of warning; I was kind of flattened by the commission and deposit on the house. Two months rent in both cases, plus a month up front. In other words, to take over the house, or apartment, you will need five months rent in your hot little hand! Compared to the one months deposit and no commission in either the US or the UK, this was kind of a shock! As an independent consultant, it came out of my own pocket as well! The good news is that you get the deposit back after one year, provided that the house hasn''t been destroyed in the meantime! Hope this helps. And by the way, Sachsenhausen is much more laid back than Frankfurt itself, which is also known as Bankfurt, rentals are lower, but still quite high, and apartments are hard to come by for those reasons. Regards John "

I like Bornheim and Bockenheimer Warte/Leipsigerstrasse (near the University) as they''re both younger and generally less expensive than most of expensive Frankfurt. Sorry don''t have an agency to suggest.

" Well, I arrived about a month ago now, and with the help of my company, was able to find a nice, if small, apartment in Sachsenshausen. The size is not so bad since I didn''t really have anything to put in it. In the chaos, I hadn''t checked this listing for quite some time, but am amazed at all the responses! So how did the meeting at Fabrik go? If a sequel is planned, I am definitely game. I definitely recommend jopilot.com for finding jobs around Germany. It''s a large database, and easy to use. Thanks again for all the advice, and maybe I will see some of you soon.! ciao, cory "

" Hi John You mentioned a word magic to me ''hills''!! :-) I am based in the Uk, starting work in F. next week (3rd April 2001). Can you tell me how high the hills round you are? I am after three things when I arrive: friendly contacts who like walking, theatre, opera, other cultural activities and food. accomodation - I would rather get a bigger place than smaller but must be a decent area. I forgot what the 3rd thing was - I''m obviously over-excited at the thought of starting my first extra-UK work!! Actually; just remembered the 3rd thing - it is that I would like to make the acquaintance of some native German speakers as I want to learn German. Marc marcbowden@hotmail.com "
