" Hi, My fiance may be transferred to Germany later this year. We are considering a winter wedding, but may have to reschedule this b/c of the move. We''ve given some thought to having a small, family wedding in Germany or somewhere else in Europe so that our closest family and friends would have a chance to travel in Europe. I''ve seen some chateaus for rent in Europe on the Internet and wondered if we could have a wedding there. They seem pretty affordable for a large enough group (cheaper than hotels). Has anyone ever stayed in these types of country estates/chateaus? (We''re looking in many parts of Western Europe) Would these be a nice place to have a wedding? Are they as nice as their pictures - or not? Thanks for your input! Sarah "

" Sarah, don''t overlook the fact that each country has its own regulations regarding marriages - check it out before you put down any deposits! "

" Hi Sarah, I got married in Germany in September 2000 so this topic is certainly not new to me. My husband and I live near the Rheingau area (Wiesbaden, Ruedesheim etc.) so our search for castles/palaces was limited to this region. If you are thinking of this region, I can give you a lot of information. There are a number of castles which are available for weddings, especially if the number of guests will be below 100. You might want to check out the following site for more information ""www.rhinecastles.com"". If you are more interested in the chateaus then try the following site ""www.hochzeitstraum.de"". I am not sure if you speak German but if you click on ""Hochzeits-Ideen"" then ""Märchenhaft im Schloss"" a few examples pop up. Just a note of advice, although getting married in Germany/overseas is very romantic for both you and your guests, wedding planning in Germany can also be frustrating if you are used to the US wedding style and customer service. You might want to consider hiring a wedding coordinator to help in the beginning, especially if you do not speak German. I believe the Hochzeitstraum link I gave you is for a wedding coordinator. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Good luck! Karee "

" Hi, Get legally married before you go to Germany. They are not to keen on letting foreigners get legally married which can has to be done at the city hall even if you have a church wedding. And if only one of you is going to work then it is a big tax advantage to be married - you save a lot more on tax then you would in the US. Rhody "

" Penny, Karee & Rhody, Thanks so much for all of your helpful advice. Getting legally married here in the US is a good idea. The castles and chateaus on the http://www.german-castles-road.com site are amazing! Are they really as beautiful as they look on the Web? Luckily, I speak some German and my fiance speaks very well. So, I think we''ll be okay -- it will be educational! Thanks again for all your ideas and advice! Sarah "
