Hello everyone.

I will be moving to Antigua in a the next few months. I have a few logistical questions.

- Is it a problem to enter the country with a one-way ticket?
- What status should I use on the forms (tourist, worker, etc)? I will be working but nothing too official.
- How often will I have to leave the country to renew my tourist status?

Any other things that I should think about will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi there, I do not remember anyone checking if tix were one way when we arrived. You will get 90day visa, and you can leave the country, but there is an alternative. Ask around or email me privately for more details. Tourist is a good status to check.

It is no problem to enter Guatemala with a one-way (no ongoing) airline ticket.

Most people in Guatemala travel via bus. Just tell the authorities (if they even bother to ask) that you will be traveling via bus to Mexico or another Central American country before your visa expires.

I flew from the US to Guatemala City and spent about 4 months in Antigua, Xela and Guate. When my 90-day visa was about to expire I took a bus to the beautiful city of San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico. Spent several days there and received another 90 day visa upon re-entering Guatemala.

The border areas are always hectic and potentially dangerous. Just keep an eye on your belongings and try to stay close to the group you are travelling with.

Hello there. You're right about asking this question to sav e yourself any last minute complications at the airport. Because depending on how strict the airline ticket agent is he/she may require an onward ticket which they do in compliance with guatemalan inmigration laws. But guess what. When you arrive in country the inmigration officials care less about how you'll depart the country or how long you'll' stay in the country. So, hopefully you can convince the airline ticket agent that you'll be leaving the country by bus to Costa Rica. Otherwise call the airline ahead of time and see what their policy is. But like I said everything boils down to how strict the agent at the airport is. On the inmigration form just check tourist. Otherwise they'll start asking you all kinds of questions. If you're holding a valid US passport you'll get a 90 day visa which you can renew in guatemala city. After that you' have to leave the country, cross the border and re-enter. Good luck.
