Renting or Buying a Home in Guatemala

June is popular time to move to Guatemala. Many expats temporarily settle in furnished rentals giving them time to look for the right place to rent or buy.

Finding a good real estate agent or agency can be key! Do you have an individual or agency to recommend? Please take a minute to post the name and website for your favorite agent or agency.

If expats in your area find housing themselves -- without the help of agents, what suggestions would you have for someone starting their search? How do they find the best places?

Thanks!

Hi everyone!
After some bad experiences at first with most of the local real estate agencies in Antigua we come across Antigua Rentals & Services, a new company dedicated to make life easy for all us and mainly help us with understanding the locals and the way things work down here
I recommend the service and attention of this great agency and I truly advice to take a unit for short term and take things easy before making any big steps... www.antiguars.com

this is not a new rental agency at all...has been around for a long while... I have personally contacted this agency in the past in looking for places to rent in Antiqua and this was over a year ago...I did not use this agency...if I did not use it was the agency did not provide good service in finding me what I wanted...or it was out of my price range...I will have to check my records to see what the reason for not using this group...

I have rented a casa for one year...did so over the internet with the owner...I was very blessed...truly I mean this. I now know I could have found the same or same for better price had I lived in a hotel for the first month and then asked around and read the signs posted everywhere of all the places available...we are happy here and the perks are great! when it is time to relocate I will just rent for one month to look around to see what my options are...

definitely, do not rent for long term without spending at least a month in the rental first...arrive and rent is the best way...lots of cheaper nicer options available by doing this...if you have to rent before arriving, do it with the owner direct, and check references...at least 4 if not more...and pics pics pics. Even then know the pics are taken to hide the flaws...does the sunshine on, or is it in the shade. I am in the shade and it is the only thing which made me want to move as it gets cold and grey here and therefore depressing...beautiful when sun is shining, and while I have huge paradise grounds...there is no where to layout and sun...all shade...in central america and I am white as a ghost...lol just kidding...oh yeah they are not going to tell you about the church music, political speeches broadcast at ear deafening proportions... I got blessed and live outside the closet village and this is not an issue for me...it is very real for others. And I was not told nor was there pics of the steps and incline to get to my casa...good thing I came for the adventure and physically am able to do so... furnished is another word which is subjective...if you have a way to cook, a fridg of some sort, size varies, and a bed, mattress to vary...consider it furnished. All else is subjective to the owners ideas...lol yeah best arrive and then rent...I was blessed and it is a paradise and again the only reason I may relocate in a year is for more direct sun and cheaper price with less steps..

I checked with them also...could stay cheaper at my home in the states...these guys are expensive, and unless you have some serious coin, you'll probably want to look elsewhere.

I would like to know if anyone has heard of Johnny Mercer of TheLatinAmericanSolution.com? He has a good schtick and has linked up with primo internet marketing genius Ken McCarthy who's one of the few real gurus in the internet marketing biz.

His advice is to get the right connections out of the gate, namely a well connected attorney. After reading the stories all over the net by expatriates, it makes sense. I'm just curious if anyone else has heard of this guy.

I hope this isn't too dangerous to do, but if anyone is willing to talk via email, contact me via expat@orggreen.com (this is a trashable email address, so if I get spammed, I'll just delete the address).

Thanks.

Addition: I was referring to the original poster who referred readers to www.antiguars.com...very nice but very spendy and not a website to go to unless you're not trying to reduce your living costs.
