A Few Basic, Silly Questions from a Newbie

Before even considering a move (or visit) to Guatemala, my wife insists that I find out:

- How frequently does the electricity "go out," and for how long?

- How reliable is phone service? Are cell phones common?

- Is home internet service common, reliable, and fast?

- Do most homes have reliable hot water and plumbing?

Keep in mind that she has been out of the country only once in her life and has no idea what to expect.

Yes, yes, yes... we intend to take a trip there to see the country for ourselves. But if I can't get answers to these questions, we won't get as far as the airport.

So, no matter how silly these questions may be to you, please throw me a bone. :) Many thanks.

Hi always ask and good to prepare your trip so it can be a success..
Electricity..
It depends where you will be but I would say pretty reliable.. I live on Lake Atitlan and it goes out maybe once a month for a couple of hours, some other areas might have more interruption of services.
Phone are very reliable.. cell phones very common and smartphones very easy to get. Great services and you can get pre paid services.
Internet also depends of your location.. the best a "DSL" line over a hard line phone with Claro.. if not I use a USB WIFI modem that you load for air times. again if you are in Antigua or Atitlan, Xela work well maybe in the Peten or Rio Dulce not so efficient.
Hot water and plumbing yes most of houses have it..
There is no silly questions..

I have seen a huge change in 20 years living here but to answer your questions.
My electricity in Guatemala City rarely goes out. The last time it went out was over six months ago.
We have three cell phones in the house and use movistar and claro and both companies have good reception. there are still some spots in the interior of the country where calls are dropped but not many.
I work 8 to 10 hours a day on internet. I have cable internet into my home and use a router to have wireless throughout the house. I may lose internet once a month for an hour or so, but I have a USB modem where I can buy time for one day if necessary.
Most homes do have hot water and plumbing. However hot water is not as plentiful as in the U.S. Many homes only have hot water in the shower which is provided by a shower nozzle that instantly heats the water as it sprays out. However for middle class families and up many new homes have hot water throughout. I have experienced both. Of course like any country, in the very poor areas there might not be hot water or even running water in the homes but I doubt you would live in one of those areas.

Hi
You made my day. I understand your problem. It's sounds like my mother.

1. In the 3 years we lived in Guatemala the power maybe went out 5 times and for 2 or 3 h at the most. It also depends on where you are thinking of settling/visiting in Guate. The rural areas outside of Guate city are more prone to blackouts.

2. Most people have sel phones and the service are reliable. Again if you decide to live in the north of Guate it might be different.

3. In Guate city and the big city's outside the capital Internet are very common. The speed is 2g, what they sell you but it's a bit slower. Never had any problems with service.

4. All homes in the middle and upper communities has running water and services. Depends on where you want to to live, but I think this should not worry you.

Hope this helps.
Why are you visiting Guate?
Will you retire or come and look for work?

Regards
