50yr old wishing to move to and work in Guatemala

Ok this may have been asked a million times, so forgive me.

I have a sister doing missionary work at the Christain Academy of Guatemala, with her family. I wish to come down and try a 6 month visit to see how things go.

I am single, but have little work experience other than running a trucking business. My dream would be to work a fishing boat a deckhand, but that is not likely to happen.

I am also 400lbs and I am coming down to try to lose weight with the help of my sister and her family, any ideas on this or suggestions, please feel free to give them, thanks.

Driving down thru Mexico, any help with this scenario, how dangerous and expensive it may be, routing, etc....

Is there work for people like me down there, my spanish is very very limited , but I wish to learn as quickly as I can. I am willing to try most anything if I am not mistreated or any such thing like that, my tolerance is limited to being treated badly, otherwise I am very patient normally and follow direction well.

Guess I could go on but will limti this for now and see what response I get.

Patrick

Hey Patrick,

My husband and I are moving to Guatemala City in July. We researched all the possible ways of moving down. I've heard that driving through mexico is not as bad as it seems. One person recommended the border crossing on Highway 2. The main highway that goes through Mexico and into Guatemala is Highway 1, but he said the highway 2 crossing is much better. Also you'll have to buy mexican insurance for your vehicle before you go. My husband and I are just going to go minimalist and fly there with some suitcases. Oh, also, i heard it might be very difficult to import a vehicle. The guatemalan govt will want lots of taxes from you. So that would be another thing for you to consider. Maybe it's better for you to just fly down? faster and less investment in case you don't like it.

Good luck, and maybe we'll see you down there,
siggi

I am very familiar with the Christian Academy since I used to live 3 blocks away, had tour clients studying there and a friend of mine www.antiguatours.net used to do her slide shows at the Academy, which by the way is one of the best Spanish schools in Antigua, would advise you to enroll, would not advise you to drive alone through Mexico and if your Sister does not have parking at home you cannot park overnights in Antigua and daytimes curtained areas only, weekends and holidays permit required or they put the 'frog' on the tire and tow, if you live outside of Antigua like Ciudad Vieja is better. And I will be honest, far fewer obese people in Central America than in States and locals ARE going to stare, there is no PC hereabouts so attractive young women often get hit on. Life in the Tropics. The best 'work' is volunteering once you learn some Spanish, earn trust of locals and opens doors to teaching or aid worker jobs, but Spanish is essential, basic or above. By the way since you can now only import vehicles to Guatemala from abroad 6 years old or under or pay double import tax on older vehicles US plates are rare in Guatemala expect to be stopped by police, driving in Mexico, no Spanish no longer an excuse, Mexican cops call the station by cellphone and tell you in English what your 'fine' is. Be very careful around Tampico, you need purchase insurance at Mexican border and Guatemalan border for Central America up to $400 if you don't speak Spanish...lot of paperwork at border crossing into Guate you get up to 45 days to keep car in country or get National plates..I would fly down. Good luck.
