Is all bottled water safe to drink? If not, what brands should I avoid, and what brands should I buy? I'll be in Antigua. Thanks.

I have always used Salvavidas and nothing else. But I believe the vast majority are ok.

The smaller .5 liter and 1 liter bottles are fine, and Salvavida is a very popular brand, but I always had problems with the 5 gallon jugs that are refillable. I still drank from it though and am still alive. Just don't drink from the tap water and you will be fine.

The five gallon bottles were they refilled by Agua Salvavidas or a private company? In my 20 years here the ones filled by Agua Salvavidas were always fine. We even used them for powered milk for our children!!!

In my 20 years here I have never received a reply as childish as yours traveler57 jajajajajajaj
I just use that so it gives the reader a feeling of some confidence since I feel I know a bit more than someone who has been here 1, 2, 5 or even 10 years....

No, never filtered. It all depends on where you are. The only place in Guatemala I would not Drink tap water is in the Peten this b/c the water is full of Lime. Antigua, Cuidad Vieja, Xela perfectly fine IMO

I believe the 5 gallon bottles were from Salv, but not 100% sure. I purchased the bottles from my landlord. The bottles were sealed, so I know they came from the company, but I just had a hard time with digesting, if you know what I mean. Maybe it was just me and my experience last year. I am currently in Chiapas, Mexico and only drink Ciel (it's a coca-cola bottled water), never had problems with it so far.

Wow...thanks for the information. Really helpful!
Of course, I plan on spending a lot of time on the toilet the first few weeks I'm there, just getting used to all the new bugs...LOL.

If you take citrus cidil extra , for example GSE brand you must probably won't get any stomach problems.. avoid too much sugar , white bread and alcohol during the transition.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapefruit_seed_extract

Is that available there or do you have to special order it? I suppose I could bring some with me, but what when it runs out?

Travel57 that amazes me. No one even in all of my wife's family who have lived her generations drinks tap water. In Guatemala City it is taking you life in your own hands and around the rest of the country there are so many pueblos that have not sewage that their waste seeps into the ground and into the drinking water, why do you think Lake Amatitlan is completely contaminated and Lake Atitlan is going to be eventually. Imagine all the pueblos that surround the lake along the rim of the crater and all that sewage just seeping down, some into the ground and some or most into the the lake. visit Lake amatitlan is is completely green sludge around the entire perimeter.

Thanks for all the info. If I buy 5 gallon bottles, can I also buy a little spigot to put the bottle on upside down to make it easy to pour?

Like I clearly wrote earlier It depends "Where" yo are. I've been here "More Than 20 years" (Sorry I couldn't help myself)), anyway I have lived all across Guatemala and of course there are places one would not touch tap water as you outlined. I drink to close to 2 gallons per day... Call Me Brave

I filter all water. I don't care if it comes in a bottle and says agua pura, I'm filtering it. We have no idea what is really in the water unless we test it every time we get it. Groundwater well water should be tested often as well since it can change from new contamination plumes. Ecofiltro seems to be a very good filter for a reasonable cost in Guate. The filter insert lasts 4 years. I toured the Ecofiltro plant in Antigua and you can view test results if you request. The bad materials in H2O might not kill you, but they could. Also overtime the harmful materials can lead to health problems and you may never know it came from drinking H2O that you would not filter yourself.

Guategringo, with 20 years of living here, you undoubtedly have had experiences and knowledge that can benefit all of us. I appreciate your willingness to share your opinions. We have been here (Panajachel) for 4 years and can say we have never experienced problems from bottled water and are not picky about brands.

Plasticisers are horrible. I made sure to get a filter that filters that out too and then store my h2O in glass or ceramic.
