I am a language/art teacher and will be moving to Guatemala in 2017. Even though I might be retired by then and receiving my SS, I am worried about not having enough to do while living there. I know I can volunteer n help others, but was wondering if it will be possible to find a teacher job, even if only part-time and if so, what do I need to do before living the USA?

I know of a school that likes English speaking people. It might work out. If you PM me I will send you contact info.
The school is NOT in Antigua but is a short drive away.

Bring a your degree and any other credentials. Pay can depend on these and they want to see them.

you should have no trouble finding some where to volunteer to teach English BUT if you want to be paid or work in a real school you will need either TEFL or TESOL certification. The better is TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages). Do not worry it does not have to be from Harvard. google it, group-on was selling it for $70.00 as an internet course from a school in England. I had nothing better to do and completed it in less than two weeks. The Guatemalan education people were happy with the certificate.

Hi Anamanni,
I'm a professor in TESOL and actually live in Antigua. I'd be happy to help out and you can do my course for free. Just access the public version (usually need to pay) at the link below. Watch all the video lessons and complete a quiz for each. I get the results and I'll send you the certificate and letter of confirmation once done. You can print and bring, I can be used as a reference and will provide a phone #.
Maxnivel also has a face to face TESOL certificate course in Antigua. Not sure of the dates. It's costly and I really only recommend teachers taking this type of face to face course after they've been teaching awhile and are sure they love teaching and want to do it more long term.

Thank you ddubel for all the great info. I will sure get on line after the holidays and do yr course. I hv been a teacher for more than 15 yrs (3rd grade all through college prep) and enjoyed tremendously. I even taught overseas. I am sure teaching ESL/Tesol will be as rewarding. Will be in touch. Gracias.

I was pursuing my degree in Early Childhood Education and was in my junior year this semester. Unfortunately, I did not pass my field placement and I am struggling with the courses. My goal has always been to move to Guatemala once I had my degree and find a job out there. Recently I was told to pursue a TESOL B.A and it would be better for me because I would be more focused on just one subject area. I was hoping that we could stay in contact because it seems to me you will be living my dream first and I would love to hear about your experiences out there in Guatemala.

Having a TESOL certificate is good, but having a degree is better. Is there any way to repeat your field placement? Sometimes things are beyond our control and, for whatever reason, it doesn't work out at that time, but that doesn't mean it won't work out at a later time.
With a TESOL certificate, you'll only be able to teach English; with an Education degree you can teach other subjects as well. There are many schools in the city that want teachers with degrees because the parents think that makes one a better teacher.
Just a thought.

Sure Zoxchilt3. I will be glad to keep on touch. I agree with the idea of trying again for yr placement test - give another try at it! A diploma will make your path more marketable.

Thank you for the support. The TESOL would also be a diploma/ degree. I would be an English as a Second language Teacher.

In the world of Education, the TESOL is a certificate, not a degree or diploma. A TESOL certificate is earned after completing a course but a degree and diploma is earned only after successfully completing many courses and practical experiences through field studies and student teaching.
A TESOL course can be completed in as little as a few days but a degree and diploma is earned only after months of study and practice.
While it is true you can teach ESL with a TESOL certificate, many, if not most schools would hire a degreed teacher over one with a certificate unless it is a matter of money, since a degreed teacher would (and should) command a greater salary/stipend.

Hi Jeaneto, I will be glad and honor to participate and help out at your center. I will be travelling to Antigua with my daughter, who is also a teacher and is at the present teaching English at an American school in Brazil, this coming December. We will be prospecting places for me to rent and sightseeing. Maybe we can meet in person then. In the meantime, how can I help?
