Besides Guatemala City and Antigua, there are fairly substantial expat communities around Lake Atitlan and Quetzaltenango. The Lake is a particularly desirable as a place to live.

sure, San Martian, 5 hours over 3 mountain ridges above way-way is a picturesque little town where rent and land are cheap and they actually have city utilities....BUT I only know person I meet that spoke English he was the owner of the only hotel you would dare stay in, and very few people speak Spanish. If you want to learn an obscure Mayan dialect ...go for it. There is one doctor in town and no hospital. The closest Walmart is 6 hours away in Mexico. The air is fresh and clean and you cannot beat the views. But why????? I was there with a local who could not wait to get back to Antigua.

Never heard of St Martian. Only heard of the martians from Mars. Sounds like San Martin misspelled. But which one of the hundreds of towns with that name.

Seems everyone who goes to Guatemala just goes to learn some spanish & then skid addle.
Or they're rich gringos who live there & own houses...around the lake or ANTIGUA.

I wish to know of a small pleasant town up in mountains to live in for one year.

Try Todos Santos in the Cuchumantes Mountains.

Not all of us fall into the two categories you mention.

You should come to Guatemala, find a temporary place to live, and travel to smaller villages in the mountains so you can find the place that's perfect for you. We can tell you of places, but only you will know what's right for you.

I really liked Rabbinal on the way down from Coban and Santiago where they have the kite festival Nov 1 both sort of in the mountains. There is a beautiful area after the ferry from Montericco between there and Estanzuela not mountains but really nice. I LOVE Chistepeque by the coast & Lake Tujexo I am not sure of the spelling too lazy to look. The road is bad 4x4 would be good but we made it in a little rental car going slow, took a while. If you go plan on staying a few days to make it worth the drive. IMHO it is the best beach in Guatemala nice hotel there kind of spendy for Guatemala and they only take visa. All these areas we found Spanish speakers which is good as my Spanish is marginal at best and we know no Mayan dialects. We have driven around a bit.

I got the ideal place for you up in the mountains just like you want it. And I am not trying to be sarcastic. But I suggest you check out this video of a village near Santa Eulalia in Huehuetenango https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAFQ_dsn-8s But I'm sure it gets cold like hell during the winter nights because it's have to be near the 13,000 above seal level.. Good luck.

Flores is nice, but it's hot hot hot there and it's the jungle, not the mountains.

You may want to look at Santo Tomas Milpas Altos. It is close to San Lucas, Antigua and GC. Past Antigua and past San Juan del Obispo is a small town Santa Maria Jesus on the side of the Agua Volcano it is nice but farther from some of the services we are all used to. Still bus service to major cities. How far out and what weather are you looking for.
