We just spent 6 mos in Antigua, Guatemala (2nd trip- longest stay) and absolutely love Guatemala!!! BUT...we travel with a service dog and this year the large fireworks were almost daily and non stop. Nothing we or the vets could do helped as he could feel the air pressure change. Anyone know anywhere in Guatelala where the fireworks are not a daily occurrence? Any help will be most appreciated! Kitaniga

The only place you won't find fireworks on a daily basis are either remote and poor areas (where they don't have extra cash to spend ) and Guatemala city I would say. It is indeed very noisy

Sorry to say but you'll find fireworks all over GT. More in some places than others.

I can feel your pain. We have lived in Panajachel for 3 years and fireworks/bombas are certainly one of the most discussed topics among the expat community. 5 street dogs adopted us and even they are jittery when the explosions occur. I have a couple suggestions. 1 Avoid any annual community fair. 2 avoid christmas 3 avoid newyears. However, if you do all this avoiding, you will miss a lot of really interesting things that make Guatemala the incredible place that it is. Sometimes a thundershirt will help calm a stressed out dog. In the end, if you choose to stay here for an extended period of time, you will just have to curse and endure or go to Mexico or back to the States in the really crazy times. Good luck!

Blame the Catholic Church they will do what it takes to get the locals to blindly follow and fork over the money. growing up in Maryland the nuns would go around the floor at school dances making sure you were leaving enough space for the holy ghost, When I lived in Haiti the priests let the witch doctors help scare away evil spirits. When I was in Nicaragua where they love to sing they would out do the evangelicals. Here in Guatemala the priests encourage setting off fireworks to scare away the devil. Guatemalans like fireworks. there is also a costume of waking people up with fireworks for their birthday. Disconnect the battery so your car alarm does not go off and wait a couple of years for your dog to get used to it and your sleeping through it. You will acclimate.
