I'm planning a trip in the next 90 days to the Antigua / Lake Atitlan area to do some research as a possible long term retirement location.
Once i arrive in Guatemala City , are there any other options to get to Antigua / Lake Atitlan besides taxi, shuttle , or the chicken bus ?
Are there any private airplane services that would fly from Guatemala City to Antigua or Lake Atitlan ? I realize that a big 747 jet is not going to fly into these area's ; i'm thinking more of a smaller propeller type with limited seating .
Any information would be appreciated..........

Hi there
Antigua is easy to get by car it is only 48 kms.. from Guatemala and if you skip the traffic hours leave before 1500 it will take you 1 hour.. to reach Antigua. You want to go faster helicopter can take you there..
Atitlan has only one air strip at the end of Santiago Bay but no regular service.. and really not set up for tourist.. I have a friend who has its own plane there.. You can also fly helicopter it takes 20 minutes cost around $ 1,000.00 I have several houses I managed that have helicopter landing pad...
For long term retirement Atitlan and Antigua are 2 different destinations. I like personally Atitlan for its landscape and views, nature, living mayan culture, the fact that the lake is not busy (almost no private boat) that you can swim.. Antigua is more urban, colonial by excellence, more social , more restaurant it all depends what is your life style .. but in both places you will have great value for your money.. Send me a PM if you want to talk further on your project as I can guide you through it having relocated myself and helping other to do it...

The tourist vans leave on a regular basis and are only $10.00 or you can get a private van or taxi for around $40.00 it takes about an hour to Antigua. There is no airport in Antigua but several private heli pads, 2 of my neighbors have turbojet helicopters and commute to work in the city daily. Robinson's will charter for around $700 to Antigua but you will have to use the Hotel Santa Domingo pad their rooms are in the $200-$300 a night range their pad is half way up a mountain outside of town and they will pick you up with a limoish SUV. The private terminal is on the other side of the airport by the time you get a taxi to take you around, get in the helicopter and cleared to leave then get the limo into town the $10.00 van is easier, faster and far cheaper

I would recommend a private auto the first time. My wife and I hire a young man named Ruben Matta to take us to Guatemala City. When we first arrived he also took us on day long sight seeing trips. He's a very nice, married man who speaks excellent Engish and is most helpful.

Thank you to the people who posted a reply with information in my original listing.
I think there might be a need for some clarification on my part regarding airplane service.
I am not looking for a private plane to use for my own personal travel. What I was asking if there were any " Mom & Pop " small companies that were offering airplane shuttle service from Guatemala City to either Antigua or Lake Atitlan .
I'm in the process of gathering information in preparation for my trip to Antigua / Lake Atitlan. I've seen many You Tube video's as well as postings on various forums regarding the different forms of ground transportation. The question regarding airplane service was to see if there was any other options available.
My apologies for the wrong choice or words.
