We are in the early stages of setting up a home in the Santa Cruz area of the lake, and I have a question regarding home internet. From my multiple trips down there, I know that Internet/Wifi can be temperamental, but I've only experienced it at restaurants, hotels, and a couple of house rentals. Signals certainly seem to be better early morning, and then gradually weaken throughout the day once people start getting online. Now I've also heard that home internet packages are typically sold by bandwidth strength, whereby if you are prepared to pay a few extra Qs, you can get a reasonable enough signal for spotty Skyping and Netflix. Can anyone give me the low-down on such things in the Santa Cruz area?

Hi Best thing really is to ask the other foreigners who have houses over there. We manage a couple of houses there and for that house we use Cristobal, based in Pana. There is also Carlos Tzul, also based in Pana. These are the only two unless you get a much more expensive satellite type deal from a provider in the US. But best to ask around Sta Cruz. As VERY much depends where you are located in Sta Cruz! Good Luck!

I live in Sta Cruz and I run several house rentals.. I use either Cristobal or Carlos Mayanet.. but for a reliable, professional backed up service I use Carlos Tzul Maya net.. https://www.facebook.com/mayanet.pana

I've heard stories that it really doesn't make any difference whether you pay extra for a higher-level of bandwidth, the signal strength is exactly the same.

No, not true. As I said it depends where you are. With a landline (NOT in Sta Cruz) you get Claro/Turbonett. Otherwise depends on your location and direct eyesight of cell towers. The speed does vary, from about 1-4mb, but that is the most you will get here at the Lake and in reality probably anywhere in Guatemala except some places in Guate City or Antigua! Best to go on to the Facebook community pages for Lake Atitlan and Sta Cruz. Then people who actually live at the Lake and in Sta Cruz can give the correct information! BUT you providers basically are Cristobal and Carlos Tzul.

I'm not a tech savy.. but I'm a daily user.. in my own house in Sta Cruz La Laguna, using Mayanet services, I can video skype or messenger, watch netflix movies.. or movies out of streaming web sites.. I have 3 kids all with ipads.. and really we barely experience lag or slowlyness.. I'm not a technician but a daily user and it works for me

This is a very promising response, Armand. Thanks. I have already sent a message to Maya Net.
