What is the best way to keep in contact with family in the USA via cell phone? Shall we get a cell phone plan here in the states or get one in Guatemala?

I think nowadays if you have a good connection WIFI at your home and get a smartphone with internet plan you can skype, (they have a very inexpensive plan that give you free call to the US), messenger, what's app... lots of alternative options

Tigo has plans that allow you so many minutes to call the US, Mexico, and Canada included in the monthly price. I think a cell phone plan from the States is more expensive, although you could compare by going to Tigo's website.

I have a vonage phone so that I can talk to anyone in the US/Canada as much as I want and they can call me for free as often as they want. It works great.

Believe it or Not. A MagicJack phone works fine in Guatemala for calls to and from the USA. I'd say can't get any cheaper than that.

T-Mobile offers a plan that provides free data roaming in most of Central America. It didn't work in Belize.
You could combine that with a Magic Jack, Skype, or FaceTime app for your communications needs.
You may also want to think about getting a less expensive local cell phone for everyday use outside your home to keep a lower profile...

You have multiple choices of basically free calls.
If you have T-Mobile, then you most likely have Wifi Calling. This means that if you have a reasonably good wifi connection, you can make and receive calls just as if you are in the USA. Your phone basically operates as if you are at home.
Otherwise, there are several apps, sch as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, Google Hangouts, Apple Facetime, etc. The only thing with these apps is that the calls are only free if the person you intend to connect with uses the same app.
